Clinical Practice
The Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery was established in 1993 to centralize and improve care of trauma victims in San Antonio and a 22-county region in South Texas. The division is composed of six full-time faculty physicians, two Physician Assistants and two Nurse Practitioners. The Division provides care for approximately 3000 admissions per year to University Hospital. In addition to providing trauma care it also provides emergency surgical services and critical care services to patients at University Hospital 24 hours a day. Offices are located within University Hospital on the 8th floor.
Residents from each of the five years of residency rotate on the trauma service for four to six weeks. The residents participate in all aspects of the service including rotations in the emergency department, ward and ICU. Daily didactic lectures and extensive opportunities for faculty-resident interaction are offered.
