The fellowship is constructed as a one or two year experience, allowing for participation in a Masters of Clinical Science Investigation program (MSCI) and participation in the ongoing NOTES research for fellows who choose a research plus clinical year experience. A one year fellowship with a focus on clinical training is available as well.

The First Year (Research Year)

During the first year the fellows are expected to enroll in the Masters program, attend the required courses, develop research protocols and develop grant writing skills as appropriate. Opportunities for clinical and surgical education research are present.

At the same time they are expected to develop independent proficiency in endoscopy through training with faculty in a patient care setting. An opportunity to gain considerable experience in the use of endoscopic ultrasound is available and the fellows are expected to become proficient in endorectal ultrasound by the end of their second year. A short rotation with a robotic facility is under negotiation.

For fellows not interested in the Masters in Science program a formal program in educational research (12 months with certificate) is available.

The Second Year (Clinical Year)

The second fellowship year is constructed as a mainly clinical year. About one day per week will be dedicated to patient encounters in the outpatient clinic setting. Having established the required skills in the virtual setting, the fellow is now expected to function as the operating surgeon in most advanced laparoscopic cases. A progression to teaching capacity for residents in selected cases is anticipated. The clinical case load is planned to be an even mixture of foregut, hernia, bariatric, Biliary, colon, and solid organ surgery. Continued participation in endoscopy, now in a teaching role, and endoscopic ultrasound is expected.

Call: The first year will be dedicated to research and education endeavors as well as endoscopy. During the second, clinical year, participation in general surgery call is appropriate.
