General Surgery Residency Program:
Kyle Anderson, MD

Dr. Anderson is from Bonham, Texas. He graduated from Austin College in
Sherman, TX in 2001 and then did two years of research at the University
of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX with the department
of Pediatric Endocrinology. He graduated from medical school at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in May 2007.
Nick Arizpe, MD

Dr. Arizpe graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baylor University in 2003. He
then attended UT Southwestern Medical School where he graduated in 2007
in the top quarter of his class. He is doing an intern year in general
surgery and starting his residency in Anesthesiology next year.

After graduating from Monterrey Tech School of Medicine, Dr. Diaz went on to obtain a Master in Public Health from Harvard. He then joined the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health, where he participated in research aimed at preventing error in surgery. Dr. Diaz did his internship in General Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital before joining UTHSCSA to complete his training.

Pranjali did her medical training from Pune, India. She then completed her Preliminary surgery training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. She is passionate about surgery and also loves playing the keyboard, painting and cooking.
Heather M. Hancock, MD

Dr. Hancock graduated with Honors from University of South Florida supported by the H. Lee Moffit Cancer Research Center Scholarhip prior to entering the Air Force where she was a Satellite Sensor Engineer for DSP and GPS systems. After being awarded the John Levitow and Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year awards at Buckley Air Force Base, she was accepted to medical school. She has continued to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and various women and childrenÃs shelters throughout her educational pursuits.

He did one year of General Surgery internship at Brown University, Rhode Island before joining UTHSCSA for General Surgery residency. Dr. Kergosien is a graduate from Vanderbilt University where he received a BE in Biomedical Engineering. After college, Dr. Kergosien spent two years doing research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center before moving to San Antonio to attend The University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio.

Dr. Martinez graduated head of her class, and earned the Diploma of Excellence for
5 consecutive years while in medical school. She has also done research at the University of Calgary in
Alberta, Canada, from 1997-1999. She is an active member of her church, and preached and fed prisoners in
her home country of Nicaragua.

Dr. Oppeltz received his medical degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela supported by the
Estimulo al Talento Scholarhip of the Fudayacucho Foundation. He worked for 1 year in an underserved
area of his country helping rural population.
He has completed his first two years of General Surgery residency with the Department of Surgery at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Currently, he is a research fellow in the
UTHSCSA Department of Surgery focusing on burn immunopathology.

Dr. Pfannstiel attended Baylor University for undergraduate education, then earned a Masters in Biological Sciences at Southern Methodist University prior to coming to medical school. While in med school Joy helped start a free clinic for women with addiction at the Alpha Home. She enjoys knitting, making things in general and spending time with friends and family.

Dr. Rai graduated from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the premier medical institute of India. He underwent his postgraduate surgical training in India. He worked for a brief period in NHS, UK before starting residency in U.S.A. He has also worked in rural areas of India where he provided primary care to the population. His other interests include cooking and listening to music.

Nathan Sneddon, MD

During his medical training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and as an Eagle Scout, Dr. Sneddon served as an Assistant Scout Master. Dr. Sneddon is fluent in Japanese after spending two years in Japan as missionary for his church. He is also an avid runner who placed 1st in his division in both the 2000 Top of Utah Marathon and the 2001 Provo River Trail Half-Marathon.
Dr. Sneddon's prior research experience includes working as a Research Assistant at UNMC Department of Ophthalmology. His studies focused on the analysis of the relationship between diabetes, aqueous humor flow, and intraocular pressure in streptozotocin induced diabetic mice.

Dr. Tindall obtained his B.A. in biology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1992. After conducting Urology research at the University of Minnesota and a five-year radio career in Austin, TX, he matriculated to The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, where he graduated with AOA honors in 2007. He is currently an intern in General Surgery at the Health Sciences Center and will remain here for his Anesthesiology residency which commences next year.

She did a year of Post-doctoral Fellowship with the Division of Pharmaceutics at Ohio State University (2001-2002). She completed five years of General Surgery training at St. Agnes Healthcare in Baltimore, MD (2002-2007).

Dr. Fields began his undergraduate training at the University of Arkansas, earning a BS in
Zoology. He then attended medical school at Texas Tech University, and did an internship in New York
City as a transitional/surgical house staff officer. Dr. Fields has also completed an
anesthesiology residency at Yale - New Haven Medical Center. He and his family are happy to be back in Texas.

Samer Sbayi, MD., is a native Canadian, who received is undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto. He went on to receive his medical Degree from Universidad Tecnologica de Santiago in the Dominican Republic. Subsequently, at Seton Hall University at St. Francis Medical Center he was trained in General Surgery. He currently is a fellow in the Minimally invasive surgery fellowship with interests in development in advanced laparoendoscopic procedures and its technology.
