Abu Naba'a, Omar Abdelaziz |

Dr. Abu Naba'a grew up in Jordan. Throughout his school years he was distinguished by his outstanding academic performance and leadership skills. He attended high school at The Jubilee School for Gifted and Talented Students; an internationally funded school that has its own modified curriculum, designed specifically to meet the needs of their students. After graduation, Dr. Abu Naba'a attended Faculty of Medicine at Jordan University. During medical school, he was known for his passion for volunteer work.
Before starting his internship in general surgery at UTHSCSA, Dr. Abu Naba'a worked for one year at one of the Ministry of Health hospitals in Amman, Jordan.
Hobbies include soccer, ping pong, and spending time with family and friends.
Andrade, Nicholas Stephen |

Dr. Andrade grew up in Dallas, Texas and went to Highland Park High
School. He became interested in medicine after breaking his leg playing
basketball in high school. Dr. Andrade attended UT Austin as an undergraduate and
studied Spanish and French, and went to UT Southwestern for medical
school. As a medical student at Parkland Hospital, Dr. Andrade became interested in neurosurgery, and
is excited to be a first-year surgery
resident. In his spare time, he likes to jog and read about economics and
the stock market.

Dr. Baum is 26 years old and happily married to Alison who is a urology resident. He graduated in 2004
from Baylor University and a 2008 graduate of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.
In his spare time, he likes to spend time in the wood shop and work on his house.

Dr. Bayer graduated from the Justus Liebig University, Giessen Germany in December 2006. She has been involved in research with the Laboratory for Experimental Cardiology at the Clinic for Internal Medicine since 2002 and is currently working on the completion of her German Medical Thesis.
Burke, Vernon P. (July - Dec) |

Dr. Burke was born in Pocatello, Idaho. He graduated high school in
Orange County, California. He then enlisted in the Navy and spent 4
years on board the USS Long Beach CGN-9 during Desert Storm. He served
as an Electrician's Mate and his duties included repair of ships
electrical systems and as a member of the ship's Fire Department. While
onboard the Long Beach, he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for
leadership.
After separating from the Navy, he attended Idaho State University where he earned a Bachelor of Nursing while serving as class president. During his undergraduate studies he served in the Wyoming National Guard as a medic with a field artillery unit out of Sheridan, Wyoming. The subsequent 6 years working as a nurse in the pediatric critical care and adult critical care areas sparked an interest in surgery to correct facial trauma and deformity.
Dr. Burke then attended University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. He participated in many committees and served as class president until graduation in 2005. A favorite dental school experience was participating in a mission trip to Milagro, Ecuador with Dr Richard Topazian where they performed cleft palate and lip repair. After dental school, Vernon matched to the UTHSCSA OMFS program and is a member of the class of 2011. He graduated from medical school in 2008 from UT Health Science Center in San Antonio and is currently enjoying a year of general surgery. He loves to spend time with his wife, Charlena, and his two sons Ozzie and Aidan. His hobbies include outdoor activities, home improvement, and reading.

Agustin graduated from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico. In 2004, he founded, along with other distinguished peers and professors, the first Scientific Society of Medical Students at this University. During his senior year, he was granted the opportunity to assist in the development of research projects. This is considered a privilege since the National Health Department grants this opportunity to only one percent of medical seniors in Mexico. Besides surgery, Agustin also enjoys jogging and playing guitar.

Dr. Duke was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but grew up in St. Louis,
Missouri. He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where he
majored in Psychology. He then went to Southern Methodist University for
graduate school for Experimental Psychology. He then transferred to the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he studied Cognitive
Psychology. He then attended University of Texas Health Science Center
at San Antonio for medical school. He is now a surgical intern at UTHSCSA.

Dr. Lamaris graduated the University of Crete Medical School in
Heraklion, Greece in 2005. Following graduation he completed a two year
post doc research fellowship at The University of Texas M.D Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston, TX, Department of infectious diseases,
infection control and employee health, conducting research in the field
of fungal infections. Among others, his projects included the
establishment of "mini-host" animal models for the study of invasive
fungal infections, as well as the study of the immuno-pharmacologic
properties of the echinocandins, a new class of antifungals. After
completing his residency, he will pursue a fellowship in trauma and
surgical critical care.

Dr. Merritt has been a leader throughout her medical training, serving on multiple boards and committees in the American and Texas Medical Associations. She is a member of Sigma Sigma Phi, a national service honor society, and she has received recognition for hours dedicated to volunteering, including the TOUCH award for service excellence. She enjoys being active, competing in tennis tournaments, and road biking.

Dr. Muncy is a 2008 graduate from Uniformed Services University. Prior to that, he served 8 years as an Air Force manpower and personnel officer after graduating from the US Air Force Academy in 1997. He is married and has three wonderful daughters, ages 16, 10, and 4.

Dr. Padilla volunteered with the Fundación Aldo Castañeda at Unidad de Cirugía Cardiovascular in Guatemala City, Guatemala, where his duties included assisting in congenital cardiac surgeries, following patients in surgery clinic and assist in lectures for medical students. During his time with this unit, Dr. Padilla participated in a study to determine the genetic components involved in total anomalous pulmonary venous return; hobbies include piano, martial arts, tennis and computer programming.

Prejesh Philips, after graduating top of his class from St Columbas School, completed his medical School at MAMC in New Delhi and started general surgical training there. He did his clinical research on laparoscopic inguinal hernia and the work was published In Surgical Endoscopy. He then completed his inter year at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY and is currently completing his surgical residency at UTHSCSA. Special interests include MIS and transplant and is hoping to pursue a career in academic medicine.

Dr. Puri went to medical school at GSVM Medical College in Kanpur, India and subsequently did his postgraduate training in surgery. While in training he was the spokesperson for Resident Doctor's Association. Before coming to UTHSC, San Antonio he was working at Artemis Health Institute in India where he was their first "Employee of the Month." Ruchir is a big Spurs fan and he loves traveling.

Dr. Richa graduated with honors from the University of
Panama in Central America. As a medical student, she volunteered in
community service programs, providing primary health care to low income
families in rural areas. She had the privilege of being invited to
participate, for three consecutive years, in ìOperation Walkî, a
charitable program sponsored by the Office of the First Lady of the
Republic of Panama and carried out by U.S. health professionals in
developing countries where they perform orthopedic surgeries to
underpriviledged patients. She was awarded a special recognition for her
outstanding participation on this program. She embraces challenges and
sees them as opportunities to grow. She enjoys outdoors activities and
has participated in sport competitions like Volleyball tournaments and
in the Ocean to Ocean Panama Canal Cayuco Race.

It all started on St. Patrick's Day in 1979, a good day for a good Irish Catholic family. I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a gymnast since the age of 3, and graduated from the University of (go lobos!). I then picked up and moved across the country to work both as a gymnastics coach and as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. As much as I loved gymnastics, the desire to be a physician won out. I traded in my leotard for a uniform and attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences for medical school. I joined the Air Force because I wanted to aim high (just kidding). I now find myself here in Texas, applying for a position in Otolaryngology for 2009.

She is married to Dr. Beau Baum and lives in San Antonio.

Dr. Eugen Stancut grew up in New York where he graduated from Binghamton
University with BA in Philosophy. Immediately after graduating college
he received commission into the United States Air Force and enrolled
into Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he received his
MD. During that time he spent 2 summers with a group of American
physicians providing medical care in rural parts of Romania. After
graduating MUSC he matched into a combined categorical General Surgery
spot at UTHSCSA and WHMC.

Dr. Jason Welter is a University of New Mexico alumni with a BS degree in Biochemistry. He recently obtained his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, during which time he was inducted into the Psi Sigma Alpha National Osteopathic Honor Society. During his enrollment at NYCOM, he also authored three review articles in conjunction with Dr. Grant Cooper, an attending physician at Columbia New York Presbyterian Hospital. Currently, Dr. Welter is a preliminary PGY-1 general surgery resident at the United States Air Force/University of Texas, San Antonio general surgery program. He is currently applying for a categorical position in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Welter is particularly interested in fracture reconstruction and orthopedic sports medicine.

Anesthesiology Critical Care Fellow Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center (WHMC)

Dr. Benson recently completed an anesthesiology residency at Vanderbilt.
He is also involved in research involving SAH and vasospasm in a rabbit
animal model, and has several other projects in development. Dr. Benson plans to
practice critical care medicine along with the full scope of
anesthesia including OB, acute pain, neuro, thoracic, and cardiac.
He enjoys the challenges of complex cases and looks forward to
service in the military.
