MD, Al-Kindy College of Medicine, Baghdad, Iraq, 2009
Dr. Al Fayyadh is originally from Baghdad, Iraq, lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for two years before moving to San Antonio to do his surgical residency. He went to Al-Kindy College of Medicine/ University of Baghdad. He worked in Al-Kindy General Teaching hospital in Baghdad for eight months as a resident during the armed conflict before immigrating to the United States with his family. His dream is to finish his general surgery residency and then do trauma/critical care fellowship with special interest being in improving and developing care protocols for mass causalities. He likes watching movies and dance shows, travel, learning about different cultures and outdoor activities.

Dr. Bakula was born in Lima, Peru. He attended medical school at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, receiving his medical degree in 2007. He did one year of social service as a physician with the Fire Department in underserved areas of Lima, providing prehospital care to trauma victims. Posteriorly, he worked as a house officer in a Non-Accredited General Surgery program at the British American Hospital in Lima for three years. Dr. Bakula has always had a great passion for teaching, and after graduating, he had the chance to lead clinical review courses for third and fourth year medical students. He is interested in pursuing a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery after residency and contribute with medical education. Dr. Bakula enjoys motorsports, movies and discovering new places to eat.

Dr. Calvo was born and raised in Weslaco, Texas, a small town in the Rio Grande Valley. She attended Texas A&M University for her undergraduate studies, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She completed medical school at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, receiving her medical degree in 2013. Dr. Calvo is interested in pursuing a fellowship in either Breast Oncology or Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Antonio Covarrubias grew up in Mission Viejo, California and by the age of 10 his family moved to Cordoba, Argentina. He pursued a medical degree at the Catholic University of Cordoba, completing his degree in December 2010. Antonio is interested in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and on his own time he loves to play soccer, go snowboarding and eat "ASADOS" (BBQ) with friends.

Dr. Febres was born and raised in Valera, Venezuela. He graduated in 2008 from medical school at La Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela. After graduation Dr. Febres worked for a year in underserved areas, doing his Social Service in a small fishing village. His interests are acute care, critical care and colorectal surgery. He enjoys soccer, jogging and spending time with his wife.

Dr. Folwell is a proud native of Abilene, TX. He studied Cell and Molecular Biology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, graduating in 2008. Having completed his undergraduate studies, he was awarded an Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force prior to beginning medical school at Texas Tech in 2009. In 2013 he completed his medical degree and was promoted to the rank of Captain. Dr. Folwell is interested in pursuing fellowship training in Surgical Oncology and will serve as an Air Force Surgeon following completion of training.

Dr. Almonte was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and attended the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) for medical school, receiving his medical degree in 2010. Dr. Almonte is interested in pursuing a fellowship in Cardiothoracic or Transplant and Hepatobiliary surgery, also, work side by side in the improvement of medical education and the development of new tools to help train the doctors and surgeons of the future.

Dr. Jordan was born in Tomsk, Russia. She moved to Houston in 2001 and went to the University of Houston for the undergraduate studies. She received her MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 2013. Her interests include Burn and Wound Care, Trauma/Critical Care and international outreach.

Dr. Johnson is a native of Southern California and attended Saint Mary's College of California for his undergraduate studies. He graduated in 2006 receiving a major in Biology with a minor in religious studies. He completed medical school at Saint George's University and received his medical degree in 2013. Dr. Johnson is interested in pursuing a fellowship in Trauma/Critical Care and starting a family with his beautiful soon-to-be wife Kassie.

Dr. Kaufmann grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas and attended Southwestern University for undergraduate studies in biochemistry and business. He then completed graduate training in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio, earning his Master's degree with research focused on the development of drug-eluting stents using nanotechnologies. He has also contributed to patented tissue engineering technology for wound healing. Dr. Kaufmann went on to attend medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, receiving his degree in 2013. Chris hopes to improve patient care by developing innovative medical technologies and incorporating advancements into the field. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing soccer, mountain biking, and making ceramic pottery.

Dr. Lewis was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2008 with a B.S. and M.S. in neuroscience. Afterwards he attended University of North Texas Health Science Center - Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. During his time there he was award a position on the Dean's List and Sigma Sigma Phi Honor Society. Remaining involved in his community he volunteered throughout Fort Worth, TX and received 2 separate T.O.U.C.H awards for exceptional time spent volunteering. In 2012 he graduated and began a preliminary surgical intern position. He is excited about his future surgical career and also enjoys cycling, discovering fine local cuisine, cooking, and spending time with friends.

Dr. Marcano graduated in 2001 from Medical School at the University of Carabobo, Valencia, Venezuela. Worked for a year in a undeserved area and then completed General Surgery Residency at the Venezuela's Central University in Caracas. As Chief Resident he co-author several papers and received awards from the Venezuelan Oncology Society and Venezuelan Surgery Society. In 2011 He completed a year of training at the Non-Accredited Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship of the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. Dr. Marcano enjoys family, sport and music.

Dr. Martinez grew up in a small town in South Texas named Karnes City. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a BA in Economics. After college graduation, he lived in Austin for 9 years. During this time I ran a small travel agency. After spending several years in the business world he decided to make a career change, and attended UTHSCSA for medical school because it is close to his hometown.

Dr. Falon Martinez-Perrin was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Martinez- Perrin received her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean in December 2011. Her interests in the surgical field are trauma and breast oncology. Falon enjoys traveling, cooking, diving, yoga and spending time with her friends and family.

Dr. Padmalayam grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. She completed medical school at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kerala, India, receiving her medical degree in 2011. Dr. Padmalayam is interested in pursuing a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery and hopes to eventually aid in providing healthcare to the underserved regions of the world.

Alejandra attended to medical school at Fundacion Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud in Bogota, Colombia. After graduating from medical school she did her Social Services in her home town Ibague, Colombia, where she developed an increasing interest in communitarian service. She served with a 'nonprofit' organization to bring medical help to poor and remote communities in Colombia. Beside surgery, Alejandra enjoys eating dessert, knowing different cultures and languages, and spending time with her loved ones.

A native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, Dr. Piccinini spent his childhood in Cambridge, England. During medical school, he was heavily involved in research, receiving scholarships for research in vascular surgery and physiology. He participated for six months in the William Harrington Medical Training Programs at the University of Miami, Florida, and completed a sub-internship in Plastic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, bringing him into contact with the cutting-edge of plastic surgery. After graduation, Pedro gained valuable experience working in clinical research trials in Brazil and helped bring emergency healthcare to underserved populations through work in public acute care centers. His interests include endovascular and other minimally-invasive surgical approaches. In his free time, he enjoys tennis, swimming and photography.

Dr. Rivero, a native of Del Rio, Texas grew up in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. He graduated from medical school at the Universidad de Monterrey, and before graduating in December 2010 he completed a year of clerkships through the Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Rivero completed his year of medical social service in a rural community near Monterrey where he provided medical care to an underserved population. He is interested in learning minimally invasive surgical approaches and is excited for the opportunities that the general surgery program at UTHSCSA provides. Dr. Rivero enjoys playing soccer, traveling, cooking and spending time with his loved ones.

Dr. Noe Rodriguez received his MD degree from the Universidad Evangelica de El Salvador and graduated with the highest honor as Valedictorian of his class. As a medical student, he volunteered in rescue efforts in the aftermath of El Salvador's earthquakes in 2001, providing emergency and trauma care to affected families. This experience motivated him to pursue skills to conduct trauma-related research in Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY, and Duke University, Durham, NC. He completed his postdoctoral research fellowship in burns and critical care at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospitals for Children, Galveston, TX. He trained and has done research to improve care of burn patients worldwide. He has published basic science and clinical research in ICU resuscitation, wound infection, metabolism, nutrition, scar development, and rehabilitation. He has had the privilege to present the results of his research in national meetings across the United States and has recently co-authored a chapter on Metabolism of Surgical Patients in the 19th edition of the Sabiston's textbook of surgery. During his residency training, he aspires to truthfully embrace clinical and academic challenges and see them as opportunities to improve patient care.

Dr. Sayf Said received his MD. from The University of Baghdad, College of Medicine in 2007. As a medical student he was involved in the management of large amount of trauma cases due to the circumstances that the country was going through. After Graduation Dr. Sayf Said did his post graduate internship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he managed many road traffic accidents, as well as general surgery cases which helped him hone his surgical skills. He joined the Texas Heart Institute, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Houston in 2010 where he got the chance to join the most prestigious Cardiovascular surgeons in the nation and witnessed the cutting edge in CV surgery. As a volunteered member in their research team he gained advance knowledge in the surgical management of end-stage heart failure patients. In 2012 Dr. Sayf Said was offered the chance to participate in more clinical environment in various medical institutions in Atlanta, where he had months of hands-on experience in Thoracic, Colo rectal, Plastic as well as Hand Surgeries which helped him to be acquainted with different surgical techniques. After that he worked as a member in the research team at the department of Neurosurgery of the University of Texas, School of Medicine at Houston. In 2013 Dr. Sayf Said has joined the General Surgery residency program in the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio where he currently work and live.

Dr. Juan Carlos Samayoa graduated from the Francisco Marroquin University, Guatemala City in 2011. After medical school, Dr. Samayoa completed a basic science research fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was later recruited by Advantagene Inc. a biotech company based in Massachusetts that focuses in gene therapy research for cancer. His wife, Michelle Matheu, will also be starting her residency at UTHSCSA in Internal Medicine. His future goal is to become an academic surgeon with research activities. When time permits he enjoys cooking, playing tennis and golf.

Dr. Shipper grew up in Houston, TX. In 2007, he graduated from Princeton University with a degree in history. After spending time two years in Washington, D.C., and Jackson Hole, WY, he returned to Texas to attend medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, from whence he graduated in 2013. As a resident, he looks forward to exploring the many facets of general surgery and aspires to become involved in academic surgery as an educator. A self-styled raconteur and master of double entendre, Dr. Shipper's avocations include reading, writing (but not 'rithmetic), subaqueous spelunking, and telling tall tales around the campfire.

Dr. Turner has lived in Texas since moving from Washington State in 2002. She attended Texas Lutheran for undergraduate years, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double degree in Molecular Biology and Chemistry. She continued on to AUC, and received her medical degree in 2013. Whereas she would like to remain open minded, Dr. Turner is interested in Cardio Thoracic as well as Reconstructive surgery. Furthermore, she is interested in the development of techniques for surgical correction of various congenital anomalies.

Dr. Nabila Lehachi Waheed was born in Algeria and moved to the US at the age of 18 and attended Syracuse university for her undergraduate studies, with a chemistry major. She worked as a chemical engineer in the R&D department at IBM and photronics for several years. She completed medical school at Rocky vista University in Denver Co receiving her medical degree in 2013. Dr. waheed has been excepted to pursuing a specialty in Radiaton oncology at Baylor college of medicine in Houston Tx after completing her surgery internship at UTHSCSA.

Dr. Wiltz is a native of Houston, Texas. She attended Lincoln University in Missouri for her undergraduate studies, graduating in 2007. She attended Graduate School at University of Missouri, where she received a Master of Arts in biological sciences. She completed medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, receiving her medical degree in 2013. Dr. Wiltz is interested in women's health.

Dr. Wu was born in a humble town of Granada Hills, California and received an undergraduate degree for Psychology at the University of California, Irvine in 2004. Dr. Wu is interested in a fellowship for Minimal Invasive Surgery and intends to make teaching a life-long endeavor.

Dr. De La Cerda III is a native of Eagle Pass, Texas and attended Baylor University for his undergraduate degree, graduating in 2009. In 2013, he received his MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio where he also completed a dual Masters in Public Health degree via the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. De La Cerda enjoys the outdoors and traveling, and is fluent in Spanish.
Brian Neuman, MD

Dr. Neuman is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and attended Yeshiva University (New York) for his undergraduate studies, graduating in 2008. He completed medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, receiving his medical degree in 2012. In 2013, he spent a year at Johns Hopkins Medical Center on an NIH training grant doing research in the Urology department. Dr. Neuman is interested in pursuing a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery and aiding in medical education throughout his career.

Dr. Stiteler was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ for her undergraduate studies, completed in 2009, and for medical school, receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2013. Dr. Stiteler matched into the urology program at UTHSCSA and will be completing her preliminary year in general surgery at UTHSCSA.

Residency, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center – El Paso
Dr. Ahmeti was born in Kosovo, Yugoslavia , where he started his medical school at the University of Prishtina. Due to the war in Kosovo, Dr. Ahmeti transferred to Albania and obtained his medical degree at the University of Tirana. After medical school, he returned to Kosovo to start his internship in the surgical field. Dr. Ahmeti then moved to the United States to pursue his surgical training where he started as a preliminary resident at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in El Paso. He continued his residency at TTUHSC to complete the five year program. Dr. Ahmeti is currently a Surgical Critical Care Fellow at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with expected completion in June 2013.
Olliver Nunez-Cantu, MD |

Dr. Nunez-Cantu was born in Guerrero, Mexico. He is a Major in the Mexican Army. He earned his medical degree Cum Laude from the Military Medical School in the top 2% of his class. In 2003, he received an Academic High Performance Diploma from the National Assessment Center for Higher Education in his country. Dr. Nunez-Cantu completed his General Surgery Residency in 2009 from the University of the Army and Air Force and was selected as the best surgeon of his class receiving the Chief of Residents Award to complete an extra year of training as General Surgeon in the Central Military Hospital in Mexico City, the Mexican Army's highest attention level hospital. After that, he received a scholarship from the Mexican Army to travel to San Antonio and join UTHSCSA for training in Trauma Surgery. Dr. Nunez-Cantu has spoken in several forums in his country. He is an enthusiastic surgeon who enjoys teaching and taking part in trauma courses. His major interests in the trauma surgery field are 'Trauma Systems' and 'Penetrating Trauma'. Dr. Nunez-Cantu loves spending time at home with his family, and he likes playing soccer, running, and playing guitar. He is currently a Trauma Surgery Fellow with expected completion in June 2013.
