Commendation Medal: 2002- Awarded for leadership and initiative both as one of the first Guardsmen to successfully complete the Air Force Space Command Scout/Sniper course, and for the role played in the wake of 11 September 2001.

Biosketch: Gabe Burkhardt is a General Surgery Resident working in Dr. Robert Johnson's laboratory in the Trauma and Emergency Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Burkhardt completed his medical training at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in 2006. Dr. Burkhardt trained in the Air Force Command Scout/Sniper course where he learned to make difficult decisions under pressure and cultivated an appreciation for precision; a devoted husband and active member in the church.
Dr. Burkhardt's prior research experience includes working as a Research Assistant at USUHS Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics. His studies focused on analysis of insulin uptake in knockout mice. Dr. Burkhardt is currently working with Dr. Peter Lopez identifying the metabolic, endocrine, and cardiovascular effects of a novel bariatric surgical procedure, sleeve gastrectomy.
