Ressearch:
The Use of AlloDerm in Immediate Breast Reconstruction Tissue Expanders. A retrospective review of patients undergoing immediate tissue expansion for breast reconstruction using AlloDerm for expander coverage. Manuscript written, awaiting patient follow up and accrual.
Aesthetic Outcomes in Breast Conservation Therapy. A retrospective review of cosmetic outcomes of breast cancer patients undergoing lumpectomy with radiation after one year or greater. Manuscript with University of Texas data currently being reviewed for publication. Also currently enrolling Wilford Hall Medical Center patients for larger patient assessement.
The Usefulness of a MRI of the Cervical Spine to a Negative CT Scan of the Cervical Spine in a Patient Who Cannot Have the Spine Cleared by Physical Exam. A retrospective review of trauma patients obtaining both CT and MRI for clearance of cervical spine injury, IRB approved.
Use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in free flap monitoring. IRB approved, currently enrolling patients.
Pulmonary Effects of Negative Pressure Therapy on Sternotomy Wounds in an Animal Model. Animal research complete, currently writing manuscript. Abstract submitted to Society of Thoracic Surgeons for Presentation in February 2008.
Wound Healing effect of sNAG membranes in the rabbit model. The use of a hemostatic sterile alginate dressing as an adjunct to wound healing on split thickness skin grafts on full thickness wounds in rabbits. IACUC approved, funded by the USAF, animal research ongoing.
Real-Time, Quantitative PCR to Assess Cerebral Oxidative Stress and Inflammation After Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest: New Data Raises New Questions. and Selective Cerebral Perfusion attenuates changes in energy substrates and ischemic metabolites during hypothermic circulatory arrest at both 18∞C and 25∞C in a porcine model. Abstracts submitted to American Academy of Pediatrics and Society of Thoracic Surgeons for Presentation in 2008. IACUC approved, animal research and data collection ongoing.
The use of GFP labeling by lentiviral vector-mediated transduction to monitor ASC tissue engineered bone formation in rats. IACUC approval pending.
Induction of osteocytes and endothelial cells from adipose stem cells for tissue engineered bone and blood vessel formation in critical rat calvarial defects. IACUC approval pending.

Biosketch: Dr. Steigelman was born in Alaska and raised in Pennsylvania and Maryland. She went to high school in Annapolis, Maryland, where she was captain of both indoor and outdoor track teams. She attended Towson University outside of Baltimore, Maryland, and went to medical school in the Air Force at USUHS, graduating in 2003. She has been at UTHSCSA since then completing a residency in General Surgery. In her off time, Megan likes to exercise and spend time outdoors with her son, Alex, and her husband, Dan.
