Dr. Escamilla attended medical school at both the University of Texas Health Science Centers – Houston and San Antonio, completing her emergency medicine residency at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia. As an independent contractor with Emergency Physicians Affiliates, Dr. Escamilla worked with five Baptist Health System Emergency Departments. Most recently, she was Chief of Service, Emergency Medicine at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital and Chair of the St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital Chest Pain Committee. Dr. Escamilla joined our faculty in December 2008.

Charles R. Bauer, M.D., graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1958 and completed a rotating internship at St. Mary's Hospital. He entered the US Air Force and spent 3 years as a flight surgeon at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. From 1962-1967 he completed four years of general surgery residency and an additional year in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. From 1967-1970 he was stationed at Tachikawa Air Base, Japan caring for Viet Nam war casualties. Dr. Bauer was Commander, 659th Air Transportable Hospital, USAF Hospital Luke, and USAF Kessler Medical Center (Brig. General position). He retired in 1982 as a Colonel with Chief Physician and Chief Flight Surgeon ratings and was awarded the Legion of Merit with 2 oak leaf clusters. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Dr. Bauer joined the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) as a general and trauma surgeon and as the Assistant Dean for Ambulatory and Emergency Services. He is board certified in general surgery, emergency medicine and medical management. The American College of Physician Executives has recognized him as a Certified Physician Executive (CPE). He continues clinical practice in emergency medicine and trauma surgery resuscitation at University Hospital. He developed the South Texas Poison Center located at UTHSCSA and was instrumental in the establishment of the Texas Poison Center Network He is a Colonel in the Texas State Guard, and serves as the Commander of the Alamo Group, Texas Medical Rangers. He is on numerous committees and Advisory Boards dealing with Trauma, Disaster Preparedness, and CBERNE. He has participated in numerous International Disaster Conferences, Orlando, Florida and has been a moderator and program committee member. Dr. Bauer has been recognized by the San Antonio Business Journal with a Life Time Achievement Award for his community and medical services to San Antonio and Texas. He has completed numerous courses and teaches on the subjects of HazMat, Biological, Chemical, Nuclear and Radiation, Disaster Response, and Hospital Emergency Incident Command. He has been the course director for close to 100 Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Courses and also teaches Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Life Support (PALS), Advanced HazMat Life Support, Advanced Pediatric Life Support. More recently he has completed the Core Disaster Life Support and Basic Disaster Life Support instructor courses and courses are being scheduled. An Advanced Disaster Life Support Course is being developed over the next year. He has attended several courses related to Nuclear and Radiation injuries and attended the course "Handling Radiation Emergencies by Emergency Department Personnel" presented by REACT/TS, Oak Ridge, Tennessee May 4-7, 2004. He completed courses: FEMA Disaster Preparedness, Emmitsburg, Maryland; Management of Biological Warfare Casualties, USAMRIID, Ft Detrick, Frederick, Maryland, and Medical Management of Chemical Casualties at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

Dallas Connor, MD received his Medical Degree from the University of California in 2000. Prior to pursuing his medical education he was awarded his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from San Francisco Graduate School in 1997 after receving his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Texas, El Paso in 1989. He returned to Texas in 2000 and completed his residency in Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2003. He has maintained a special interest in pediatric emergency medicine and spent his career concentrating on the acute care of injured and medically ill children. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and holds dual appointments as Assitant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics as well as the Department of Surgery, division of Emergency Medicine.

Becky Doran, MD, earned her Medical Degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Medical School in 2002. While attending she was awarded the honor of Outstanding Senior Student of the Year by the Texas College of Emergency Physicians. Prior to entering medical school, she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1998 from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After earning her Medical Degree, she completed an Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics Combined Residency at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2007 and where she served as Chief Resident from 2005-2007. Subsequently Dr. Doran was appointed as an Assistant Professor for the Indiana University School of Medicine in both the Departments of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics. During her time in Indiana she served as clinical faculty for the Wishard Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children Emergency Departments, two busy level one trauma centers. Dr. Doran holds current boards certifications from both the American Board of Emergency Medicine and American Board of Pediatrics. She joins the Department of Surgery in December 2009 as the Director for the section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Miguel Fernández is responsible for the operation of the South Texas Poison Center and serves as liaison between the University Hospital and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Fernández completed his postgraduate training in medical toxicology at Arizona Health Sciences Center, University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona and his emergency medicine training in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Drew Medical Center, Martin Luther King, Jr., General Hospital, University of California at Los Angeles in California.

In addition to his extensive medical training, Dr. Fernández has received numerous honors and awards which include the following: Fellow of the American College of Medical Toxicology, Fellowship in Health Care Policy, NYU School of Public Policy/National Hispanic Medical Association, New York and Washington DC, Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Award and the appointment by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson to serve on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the CDC in Atlanta.

As a medical expert in toxicology and poison control, Dr. Fernández has been involved both nationally and internationally in the development of poison centers. Current projects include poisoning prevention education, telemedicine video-conferencing for emergency medicine/medical toxicology, herbal medication toxicology, acetaminophen toxicity, snakebite envenomizations, hyperbaric medicine, plant toxins, and US-Mexico border toxicology.

Dr. Fishman graduated form the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 & it's school of medicine in 1979. She completed an internal medicine residency at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA in 1982 and then relocated to San Antonio. From 1982 to 1988 Dr. Fishman practiced general internal medicine with a group model HMO. She joined the faculty in 1988 and has served as Assistant Medical Director and Director of Medicine Services in the Emergency Center. She is currently Director of Patient Relations for the Emergency Center. Dr. Fishman is currently Associate Professor with cross appointments in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Hennessy received his degree from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston in July 2003 and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in July 2006. He received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 1989 from the United States Military Academy from West Point, New York. Dr. Hennessy has earned numerous military awards and is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He joined the UTHSCSA in September2009 as Assistant Clinical Instructor.

Dr. Manifold received his DO in 1993 from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. He also received his BA in Physiology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Carbondle, IL in 1989. His Residency in Emergency Medicine was done in 1997 through Joint Military Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency at San Antonio, TX. Dr. Maniford joined the Department of Surgery September 2009.

Dr. McManus received his degree from the Medical College of Georgia in June 1988 and completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in July 1999, and an Emergency Medical Services Fellowship Program in July 2004. He joined the UTHSCSA in March of 2006 as a Clinical Assistant Professor. In 2005, Dr. McManus was awarded the Methodist Health Care Annual Physicians Recognition Award. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, instructor of ACLS, PALS, and ABLS, and BLS, AHLS and ATLS provider.

Dr. Mora received his degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1996 and completed his Residency from Louisiana State University. He joined the UTHSCSA in July 2000 as Clinical Assistant Professor. He is the Third year Medical Student Clerkship Director and is a valuable mentor for students who are interested in going into Emergency Medicine Medicine as a career. He is a member of the UHS Emergency Center committee. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Salmon attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. She completed her residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Salmon was a Clinical Associate in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles, California, followed by an appointment at the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Department. Dr. Salmon is currently the Medical Director at the Center for Clinical Age Management. Dr. Salmon will join our faculty as an assistant professor on December 1, 2008.

Dr. Schuster earned his MD from the UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine in 1991. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 1992, and a residency in Emergency Medicine in 1995 at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Dr. Schuster joined the Emergency Medicine faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor in January 2009.

Dr. Sparkman received his MD from UT Southwestern, Dallas, TX in 1996. He completed his Internship training at Parkland Memorial Hospital in 1997 and Emergency Medicine Residency at Summa Health System in Akron, OH in 2000. He joined the faculty at the UTHSCSA in July 2000. Dr. Sparkman is co-chair of the Emergency Center Design committee, the EM representative for UTHSCSA, Department of EMT and San Antonio EMS. He also lead a team to revise our Emergency Center Triage guidelines and actively participates in Acute Care and Transfer Review committees.

Dr. Spitz is an Assistant Professor who joined the staff in December 2003. He is a talented, dedicated physician who demonstrates great concern for his patients. He has a very professional demeanor and relates very well to all members of the nursing, technical, and medical staff. He has demonstrated a great enthusiasm for student and resident teaching. He is a valuable mentor for students who are interested in going into Emergency Medicine as a career. Dr. Spitz represents the Division of EM on the UHS Orion(POE) work group. In addition, Dr. Spitz is working on building our divisional web site. Dr. Spitz also tracks which faculty development courses each faculty member takes in the Division.

Dr. Terpolilli received his Medical Degree from University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine in 1982. He completed his Internship in Emergency Medicine from Akron City Hospital in 1983 and his Residency in 1985 from Akon City as well. While in Ohio, Dr. Terpolilli served as Chief of Emergency Medicine from 1984-1985. Dr. Terpolilli joined the UTHSCSA faculty in 1994 and is now Associate Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine. He serves as Assistant Chief to the Medical Director in his absence. Dr. Terpolilli is an active member of the Medical Schools Admission Committee interviewing students on a weekly basis for Admissions. He also advises students in all years of Medical School. He actively teaches fourth year medical students ACLS. Dr. Terpolilli represents the Emergency Center on the UHS CPR committee which he serves as Chairman. He is an active member of the TCEP education committee and serves as CME monitor. He also is an Oral Board Examiner for the ABEM.

Lizette Villarreal is responsible for the daily operation and management of the South Texas Poison Center as Assistant Director. Lizette holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Psychology from the University of the Incarnate Word, and a Master of Arts in Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Ms. Villarreal is currently working on her dissertation for her Doctorate of Philosophy in Applied Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

As a member of the Department of Surgery faculty, her research areas of expertise include Hispanic unintentional injury, social and economic health disparities in minority communities, program evaluation, and health survey research. Lizette's previous research work has focused on the development and evaluation of school-based prevention programs in the areas of underage drinking and impaired driving, child passenger safety, safety belt use, injury prevention, and traffic safety. Mrs. Villarreal's research has been published in national peer reviewed journals, and her work is continuously highlighted at professional conferences around the nation.

Dr. Williams earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology at Williams College in 1996. He then attended Tulane University where he was conferred his Doctor of Medicine in 2002. His academic internship and residency were completed at The University of Cincinnati between 2002 and 2006. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in 2007. He was appointed January 1, 2008 as Assistant Professor at the UTHSCSA.

Photo Carmelito Arkangel, MD, Assistant Professor

Dr. Arkangel is the first American of Filipino ancestry to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He was commissioned in the Infantry in 1965. He underwent Airborne and Ranger training at Fort Benning, GA. Then a year tour in the Panama Canal Zone with the 508th Airborne Infantry. His first tour in Vietnam was an advisor to the Republic of Viet Nam Army, which included the Tet Offensive of 1968. He received further training at Fort Benning in the infantry Officers Advanced Course, Pathfinder School, Combat Air Operations Specialist Training, Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Employment training before returning to Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division where he served as an airborne rifle company commander and the 3rd Brigade Air operations Officer. He returned to the USA where he served as an Assistant Professor of Military History at Seton Hall University, where he completed his premedical college courses during night and weekend courses. He attended what was then Rutgers Medical School where he received his MMS and MD. He did a flexible internship at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA. Dr. Arkangel completed his residency in the pilot class for the military in Emergency Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center where he was the Chief Resident. During this time, he was one of the Emergency Physicians that created and formed the medical package for the initial Iran rescue. He was the first residency trained Emergency Physician to go to the "field" and he was the Chief of EMS at Womack Army Community Hospital, Fort Bragg for four years while also providing medical coverage for counterterrorist activities. He retired from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and the Joint Special Operations Surgeon in 1985. After serving as a Staff Emergency Physician at Citizens Medical Center, Victoria, TX from 1985 to 1988, he returned to San Antonio where he was a staff Emergency Physician at various Emergency Departments in the city. He was recalled to active duty for Desert Storm in 1991 where he joined the 24th Infantry Division in the assault. He joined the UTHSCSA staff in 1993 as the first trained residency Emergency Physician.
