Assistant / Associate Professor of Vascular Surgery

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is seeking an academic faculty member at the Assistant/Associate Professor level for the Division of Vascular Surgery. Qualified individuals will have completed an approved Vascular Surgery Fellowship and possess or be eligible for a certificate of additional qualifications in vascular surgery. Training in endovascular techniques is required. Division faculty members have clinical and educational responsibilities at University Hospital, the adjacent Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, as well as at private community hospitals. The Division of Vascular Surgery is responsible also for the ICAVL accredited laboratories at several local facilities.

The Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Medicine seeks qualified applicants for the position of Program Director for Surgery Residency Program Development. This 40% part-time position reports to the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and the prospective candidate must be board certified by The American Board of Surgery, demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by scholarly publications, participation in specialty society organizations, and/or peer-reviewed funding, and have the required qualifications to be appointed to the rank of non-tenure track adjunct faculty at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. The position will be administratively housed at the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) in Harlingen, Texas; and, it is expected that the holder of this position will be able to obtain a Texas medical license and maintain an active clinical practice. The primary focus for this position is to establish the strategic framework that will lead to the development of a surgery residency program in the Lower Rio Grande Valley RAHC. This includes, but is not limited to: working and coordinating with the Chair of the Department of Surgery, the Regional Dean, the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and a consortium of hospitals; constructing a feasibility assessment, strategic plan, budget and implementation timelines for the creation of the surgery residency program; meeting with hospital partners and practicing physicians to assess level of clinical capacity and surgical caseloads to support resident training; putting together a faculty roster and identifying areas for faculty recruitment and faculty development; and other duties as detailed within the ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in General Surgery. It is expected that in order to accomplish the aforementioned objectives the Program Director needs to have a significant understanding regarding the accreditation requirements for a surgery residency and the core competencies as set forth by the Surgery Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The successful candidate will be expected to submit a Program Information Form (PIF) for a new surgery residency program. Successful candidates will have demonstrated excellent team building and communication skills, and in-depth understanding of accreditation requirements. Academic rank and compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's level of experience. Training Program for Research Scientists in Trauma

University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio now offers an interdepartmental training program in Injury, Ischemia and Inflammation: A Translational Approach to Trauma Treatment for post doctoral fellows. Twenty-three faculty members from seven departments (Surgery, Cellular and Structural Biology, Physiology, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Biochemistry, Endodontics, and Pathology) are trainers on this NIH training grant.
The training program provides stipends and training for postdoctoral fellows interested in basic and translational research that holds promise for practical application for surgery and trauma. Trainees participate in the Masters in Clinical Investigation or PhD in Surgery/Physiology and are given an opportunity to take 24 clinical night calls per year.

Chief, Division of Emergency Medicine

The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is seeking an Emergency Medicine academic leader to become the Chief of the Division of Emergency Medicine and to develop the Division into a new Department of Emergency Medicine as the Founding Chair. The Department of Emergency Medicine will encompass an emergency medicine residency program, active research activities and expanded numbers of faculty members. Emergency Medicine is based at University Hospital, a licensed 700 bed tertiary care hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center.
The Chief will continue with the development of an ACGME accredited Emergency Medicine residency. The goal is to obtain accreditation within 18-24 months. The Chief will recruit additional academic and boarded emergency medicine physicians, foster departmental research activities and build a cohesive, high performing, financially viable department that exemplifies evidence based medicine standards and protocols. The Chief will also have the opportunity to move Emergency Medicine into a new and expanded Emergency Department in 2012. The Emergency Department will have 80,000 square feet, 65 bays and new faculty office space.
This position requires strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a complex academic environment. Candidates must be at an academic rank of associate professor or professor with prior leadership experience. Candidates must also be a respected clinician, educator, administrator and researcher. A track record of extramural funded research is desirable.
