Biosketch
Dr. Sirinek received his medical degree and Physiology from Ohio State
University and completed his general surgery residency at Ohio State
University College of Medicine. He is the Professor and Chief Division
of General and Laparoendoscopic Surgery. His research interests are
physiologic response to laparoscopic surgery; long-tern survival
following portacaval shunt; physiology and medical/surgical treatment of
delayed gastric emptying.

Biosketch
Wayne H. Schwesinger, MD is a native of Tacoma, Washington and a
graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.
After a tour of duty in the United States Air Force he completed his
training in general surgery and gastroenterology at the University of
North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He is currently a Professor of Surgery
and the director of surgical endoscopy. He is a member of 17
professional organizations. His clinical and research include biliary
and diverticular disease and the surgical management of obesity.
Wayne Schwesinger, MD, Professor of Surgery (Division of General & Laparoendoscopic Surgery), receives 2008 Clinical Excellence Award on January 31, 2008. Dr. Van Sickle received his medical degree from the University of
Tennessee in 1994 and completed his surgical residency training at
Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, GA and New Hanover Regional
Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. He went into private practice in
general surgery for four years in Anderson, SC before returning to
academics in 2003 to complete a two-year fellowship in Advanced
Laparoscopy and GI Surgery at Emory University Hospital. Dr. Van Sickle
joined the faculty at UTHSCSA in Sept. 2005 and is an Assistant
Professor of Surgery in the Division of General and Laparoendoscopic
Surgery and interim Chief of General Surgery at the Audie L. Murphy
Veterans Administration Hospital.
Stephen M. Cohn, MD, Professor

Biosketch
Dr. Cohn received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and
completed his residency training at Baylor and Boston University, where
he then completed a critical care fellowship in 1987. He joined the
faculty at Yale University in 1990 where he served as Chief of Trauma
and Surgical Critical Care. In 1997 he arrived at the University of
Miami to become Chief, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
While in Miami he also held the offices of Medical Director of the Ryder
Trauma Center and Co-Director, US Army Trauma Training Center. Dr. Cohn holds
the Witten B. Russ
Chair.
Patrick Nguyen, MD, Assistant Professor, General and Laparoendoscopic

Biosketch
Dr. Nguyen graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in
Microbiology in 2000. He completed medical school in San Antonio in 2004 and was
an intern in General Surgery in San Antonio from 2004 to 2005. He completed his
General Surgery training in 2009, and was awarded numerous teaching awards
during his five years of training. He will join our faculty July 2009 as an
Assistant Professor of Surgery where he will lead the expansion of the General
Surgery Service at UT Medicine Westover Hills. Dr. Nguyen is board certified by the American
Board of Surgery. He is fluent in French,
Vietnamese, and some Spanish.
Michelle K. Savu, MD, FACS, Assistant Professor, General and Laparoendoscopic

Dr. Savu attended medical school at
the Medical College of Virginia and completed a general surgery
residency at the New York Medical College/Westchester Medical Center in
Westchester, New York. She completed a research fellowship at Cornell
Medical College in Trauma and Sepsis and an Laparoscopic/Robotic surgery
fellowship at the European Institute of Telesurgery. She was an
Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California
ñ San Diego. Dr. Savu will continue her commitment to educational and
clinical excellence when she joins our faculty. Dr. Savu will join our
faculty on November 1, 2008 with a joint appointment at the Audie L.
Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital where she will build a bariatric
center. She will also perform bariatric surgery at local private
hospitals. Additionally, she will also continue her research on the
efficacy of bariatric surgery in the management of diabetic patients.

Dr. Logue attended medical school at The University
of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama and completed a
general surgery residency at The University of Tennessee Health Science
Center at Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Logue has been participating in a
minimally invasive fellowship (MIS) in our department since July of this
year. She will transition to junior faculty in the Division of General
Surgery on October 1, 2008. She will also have a joint appointment at
the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital.
