Endoscopy
Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic technique. The MARC's Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) has high-definition capabilities to support laparoscopies and endoscopies. Endoscopy is generally used to evaluate and treat stomach pain, ulcers, gastritis, difficulty swallowing, digestive tract bleeding, changes in bowel habits, polyps.

Laparoscopy and Laparoendoscopy
When appropriate, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) can provide dramatic improvements in patient care. Instead of making large incisions, many procedures are now successfully performed using very small incisions and special instruments while viewing a monitor. This approach offers many advantages to patients over traditional open surgery, such as reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery time, and obvious cosmetic differences.
MIS continues to evolve and a wide variety of diseases are now being successfully treated using this approach. Laparoscopic surgery has been successfully performed at UTHSCSA since the early 1990's, beginning with the treatment of gall bladder disease. Now appendectomy, hernia surgery, anti-reflux surgery, colon resection, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, bariatric surgery, and pancreatic surgery can often be performed laparoscopically.

Hernias
Our general surgeons evaluate and treat all types of hernias. Most patients with hernias are initially seen by their primary care physician or internist because of a lump or abdominal pain. A surgical opinion is then sought for these hernias. In many cases, the surgical procedures for these hernias can be completed on an outpatient basis. The laparoscopic approach is often considered and many hernias can be repaired laparoscopically. The division of General Surgery has a special interest and expertise in management and treatment of hernias.
