Jayson D. Aydelotte, MD, Assistant Professor/Clinical (Trauma)
Dr. Aydelotte received his medical degree from UTHSCSA in 1998. He completed a
residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Brooke
Army Medical Center in 2006. He has been a staff surgeon in General Surgery and
Surgical Critical care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he was the
Surgical Director of the SICU and Chief of Trauma Surgery. Dr. Aydelotte was a
trauma surgeon at the 28th Combat Support hospital in Baghdad, Iraq in 2007 and
was the Chief of Surgery for the 47th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq in 2009.
Dr. Aydelotte is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
He separated from the Army in April of 2011 and joined the faculty of the
Division of Trauma in May. Dr. Aydelotte's interests include
motorcycle-associated injury prevention, new product development, and surgeon
physical fitness.

Richard M. Peterson, MD, MPH, FACS, Assistant Professor (General & Laparoendoscopic Surgery)
Director, UT Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery
Dr. Richard Peterson obtained his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in biology
from the University of California, Riverside. He then went on to obtain a
Masters in Public Health (MPH) at the East Stroudsburg University in East
Stroudsburg, PA. He obtained his MD degree from the American University of the
Caribbean. He completed his General Surgery residency at St. Agnes Hospital in
Baltimore, MD. He then went on to pursue a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic
and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Southern California. Following the
completion of his training he entered into Active Duty service with the United
States Air Force. He served two combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During his time in the Air Force, Dr.
Peterson served as Chief of Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at
Wilford Hall Medical Center. He expanded the program to be the largest program
in the Department of Defense. He also served as the Consultant to the Air Force
Surgeon General on Bariatrics during this time. Dr. Peterson was recently
selected by his fellow physicians as one of San Antonio's Best Doctors.

Dr. McNeil graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School in
2002 with High Distinction. He completed his residency at Brooke Army Medical
Center in San Antonio, Texas, June 2006. Dr. McNeil is Board Certified by the
American Board of Emergency Medicine and belongs to the American College of
Emergency Physicians and Society of Emergency Medicine. He has received numerous

Juquan Song, MD, Assistant Professor (Trauma Research)
Dr. Song obtained his MD in 1993 and worked as forensic doctor for seven years at China.
From 2006 to 2010, he received NIH T32 postdoctoral research fellowship training at the
University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and Shriners Hospital for Children at
Galveston. He joined the University of Texas health Science Center as a research assistant
professor in July, 2010.

Lori Pounds, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor (Vascular/Endovascular

Dr. Pounds grew up in Jeannette, Pennsylvania (western PA). She
went to the University of Pittsburgh for
undergraduate school, and attended Temple University school of Medicine. She did
her general surgical residency at
the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and then went back to Temple for a Vascular
Surgery Fellowship. Dr. Pounds returned to wUTMB in Galveston and was an assistant professor for 6 years.
She relocated to San Antonio in 2007 and had a successful private practice, leaving for the opportunity to
teach and work with the veterans in a dual appointment in the UTHSCSA Division of Vascular/Endovascular Surgery.

Salim Rezaie, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor (Emergency Medicine)
Dr. Rezaie received his Medical degree from Texas A& M College of Medicine in
Temple, Texas in 2005 and completed his Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine
combined Residency at Brody school of Medicine at East Carolina University/Pitt
County Memorial Hospital June 2010. He received his B.S. in Biology May 1999.

Dr. Raul Ramos is a nationally and internationally recognized physician
dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum.Dr.
Ramos has been a member of the University of Texas Health Science Center
clinical faculty for more than 20 years and has presented educational seminars
at conferences around the world. Additionally, surgeons from all over the world
come to work in conjunction with Dr. Ramos in learning the most advanced
surgical techniques and procedures. Along with patient care and teaching, Dr.
Ramos actively participates in civic and educational activities throughout the
United States and Mexico.

Zhenyu Qin, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor / Research (Vascular/Endovascular Surgery)
Dr. Qin received a Master's and MD from Xian Medical University with a
specialization in dermatology, and his PhD from the Chinese Academy of Medical
Sciences at Peking Union Medical College, with both his Masters and PhD in
microbial infections, inflammation and host-pathogen interactions that led to 7
publications. He was a postdoctoral fellow for one year at the National
Institute of Infectious Diseases in Atlanta, and a second 3-year postdoctoral
fellowship at Emory University. He worked with Drs. Tohru Fukai and David
Harrison on reactive oxygen species at Emory. Before joining to UTHSCSA Division
of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Qin also worked at the University of Cincinnati
Division of Cardiovascular Disease for four years as a Research Instructor.

Boyce B. Oliver, Jr., MD, Professor (Surgical Oncology)
The Department of Surgery is extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Oliver, who became full-time faculty
in January 2010. Dr. Oliver obtained his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and his MD from
University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He completed his general surgery residency at
UTHSCSA and his surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. Dr. Oliver comes to
us from a highly successful San Antonio private practice. Throughout his career, Dr. Oliver has been
committed to the training of general surgery residents at UTHSCA. He has been a clinical adjunct
member of the department since 1990. He was also instrumental in the fund raising efforts to establish
the Stewart M. and Hugh M. Johnson Center for Surgical Innovation in 2006. Dr. Oliver will practice at
the CTRC. His clinical interests include surgical oncology with a special interest in breast, thyroid and
parathyroid disease.

Ismael Jatoi, MD, Professor (Surgical Oncology)
Please join the Department of Surgery in welcoming Dr. Ismail Jatoi, Professor and Chief of
Surgical Oncology, who joined our faculty in January 2010.
Dr. Ismail Jatoi
obtained his undergraduate bachelor's degree from Washington University in St.
Louis and his MD and PhD degrees from St. Louis University. He is a diplomate
of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of
Surgeons. He completed fellowship training in surgical oncology at the Royal
Marsden Hospital in London, England. Dr. Jatoi served in the U.S. military for
many years, and was a Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University
in Bethesda, Maryland. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Colonel.
Dr. Jatoi has had a longstanding interest in the treatment of breast cancer, the
management of women at increased risk for breast cancer, and cancer
epidemiology.
Dr. Jatoi's clinical interests include management of women at high risk for
breast disease, sentinel lymph node biopsies, breast-conserving therapy,
management of early breast cancer and locally advanced breast disease, and
benign breast disease.

Becky Doran, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor (Emergency Medicine)
Becky Doran, MD, earned her Medical Degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San
Antonio Medical School in 2002. While attending she was awarded the honor of Outstanding Senior
Student of the Year by the Texas College of Emergency Physicians. Prior to entering medical school, she
received her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1998 from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After
earning her Medical Degree, she completed an Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics Combined
Residency at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2007 and where she served as Chief Resident
from 2005-2007. Subsequently Dr. Doran was appointed as an Assistant Professor for the Indiana
University School of Medicine in both the Departments of Emergency Medicine and the Department of
Pediatrics. During her time in Indiana she served as clinical faculty for the Wishard Hospital and Riley
Hospital for Children Emergency Departments, two busy level one trauma centers. Dr. Doran holds
current boards certifications from both the American Board of Emergency Medicine and American
Board of Pediatrics. She joins the Department of Surgery in December 2009 as the Director for the
section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Hennessy received his degree from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston
in July 2003 and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Brooke Army

Jay Pal, MD, Assistant Professor (Cardiothoracic)
Dr. Jay Pal received his undergraduate education at the University of
California at Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Molecular
and Cellular Biology. He then matriculated at the Chicago Medical School
where he enrolled in the MD/PhD program and began his basic science
research in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. His graduate
thesis investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying congenital
cataracts and demonstrated new mechanisms for loss-of-function mutations
in gap junctional channels. After completing medical school, he joined
the general surgery residency at the University of California at San
Francisco East Bay program under the direction of Dr. Claude Organ and
Dr. Alden Harken. There, he received the Arthur J. Hunnicutt Excellence
in Teaching Award. Following general surgery, Dr. Pal traveled to North
Carolina for his cardiothoracic training at Duke University. He
developed an interest in heart transplantation and mechanical
circulatory support for the treatment of heart failure.

John Oh, MD, Clinical Instructor (Trauma)
Dr. Oh completed his general surgery residency in 2003 at the William
Beaumont Army Medical Center. He then served two years at the 121st
General Hospital in Seoul, Korea, and 3 years at Carl R. Darnall Army
Medical Center at Ft. Hood, TX after graduation. In between, he has been
assigned to the 745th Forward Surgical Team, deployed to OEF, and the
102nd Forward Surgical Team, deployed to OIF.

Amit Parikh, DO, Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellow and Instructor (General Surgery)
Dr. Parikh, is a native of India, but grew up in Chicago. He
received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at
Chicago. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Western
University of Health Sciences in California, and completed his general
surgery residency at Midwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Parikh is
currently a fellow in the Department of Surgery minimally invasive
fellowship program.

Luis A. Jaramillo, MD, Assistant Professor (Plastic Surgery)
Dr. Jaramillo's interests include general plastic and
reconstructive surgery as well as oncologic reconstruction, endoscopic
assisted surgery and breast surgery. Dr. Jaramillo completed his
General Surgery Residency with the Department of Surgery here at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and was
accepted into the two year Plastic Surgery Residency Program with the
Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Upon successfully
completing Plastic Surgery Residency Program, he was recruited back to
UTHSCSA to join as a new faculty member with the Division of Plastic
Surgery in 2009. Dr. Jaramillo's dedication to both patient care and
overall education to the residency program has reinforced the overall
mission for the Division of Plastic Surgery at UTHSCSA.
Patrick Nguyen, MD, Assistant Professor (General Surgery)
The Department of Surgery is very pleased to welcome Patrick Nguyen, MD, to our faculty.
Dr. Nguyen graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in Microbiology in 2000. He completed medical school in San Antonio in 2004 and was an intern in General Surgery in San Antonio from 2004 to 2005. He completed his General Surgery training in 2009, and was awarded numerous teaching awards during his five years of training. He will join our faculty July 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Surgery where he will lead the expansion of the General Surgery Service at UT Medicine Westover Hills. Dr. Nguyen is fluent in French, Vietnamese, and some Spanish.

Dr. Bini completed his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health
Sciences Center in 1999. He completed his residency at UTHSCSA in 2004, and
will complete a surgical critical care fellowship at UTHSCSA in June, 2009.
Dr. Bini is currently a general/Trauma surgeon at Wilford Hall USAF Medical
Center. Dr. Bini has deployed twice to Iraq and is the Course Director for
the Defense Military Readiness Training Institute's Emergency War Surgery

Dr. McLaughlin completed his Bachelor of Science with high honors in 1977 at Michigan State
University. He then completed an additional four years at University of Osteopathic Medicine
and Health Sciences where he received his Doctor of Osteopathy. He is board certified in
Emergency Medicine and is serving as Program Director of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital

Ms. Cain attended Nursing School at the University of Texas
Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing, graduating with honors
in 1995.
She completed a Post-Masters Family
Nurse Practitioner Program at the UTHSCSA Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and
School of Nursing.
Ms. Cain is board certified by the American Academy of Wound Management. She
also does volunteer/community work for the American Stroke Association,
a division of American Heart Association, and assisted with the hurricane
evacuees in Galveston. She has 10 years of experience in a broad range
of areas including anticoagulation management, wound care, geriatric and
family practice and preventative healthcare. Ms. Cain joined the
faculty March 2009.
Amanda Loquias, RN, MSN, Faculty Associate (Tauma)
Ms. Loquias earned her Master's of Science in Nursing at the University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2005, and is certified
as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Amanda joined the Division of Trauma
(full-time) in March of 2009. She serves as a Nurse Practitioner with
the resident team providing care to our Pediatric Trauma and Emergency
Surgery patients.
Matthew J. Sideman, MD, Assistant Professor, Vascular Surgery
Dr. Sideman attended medical school at the UTHSCSA and completed a
general surgery residency at the University of Louisville in Louisville,
Kentucky. He completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the University
of Utah School of Medicine and an endovascular surgery fellowship at the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has been an assistant professor at the
University of Oklahoma for six years where he has received educational
accolades such as the Aesculapian Award (twice) for best medical
school-wide teacher (as voted by fourth year medical students) and the
Crimson Apple Teaching Award. Dr. Sideman will continue his commitment
to educational excellence when he joins our faculty and establishes a
vascular surgery fellowship. He will also be very involved in resident
training. Clinically, he will lead the expansion of the vascular surgery
service at the UT Medicine Westover Hills site. He will also work at
University Hospital and the Audie L Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Sideman will join the faculty as an assistant professor in March 2009.

Dr. Pearce received his MD from the UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine in 2000. After

Dr. Escamilla attended medical
school at both the University of Texas Health Science Centers - Houston
and San Antonio, completing her emergency medicine residency at the
Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia. As an independent
contractor with Emergency Physicians Affiliates, Dr. Escamilla worked
with five Baptist Health System Emergency Departments. Most recently,
she was Chief of Service, Emergency Medicine at St. Luke’s Baptist
Hospital and Chair of the St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital Chest Pain

Dr. Crutchley has joined the Division of Vascular Surgery as Assistant
Professor. She obtained her medical degree from the
University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, NV in 2001. She
continued her medical education with her residency in General Surgery at
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 2001 -
2006 and completed her Vascular Surgery fellowship training at Wake
Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC in 2008. She is

Surgery and Vascular Surgery.

ñ San Diego. Dr. Savu will continue her commitment to educational and

Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital where she will build a bariatric
center. She will also perform bariatric surgery at local private

Peter Yen, Faculty Associate (Trauma)
Mr. Yen completed his PA degree through D'Youville College at Buffalo,
New York in 2001. Immediately following graduation, he joined Shriners
Hospital for Children/UTMB, with focus in metabolic research, acute
care, and plastic reconstructive surgery on burn children. In 2004, Mr.
Yen joined the Burn Center at Brooke Army Medical Center/ Institute of
surgical research, where he provided acute burn care and plastic
reconstruction to wounded soldiers and adult civilians. He joined the
trauma division in 2008, where he serves to provide burn care and
trauma/emergency care.

Lizette Villarreal, MA, Faculty Associate, Emergency Medicine /
South Texas Poison Center
As assistant director, Lizette Villarreal is responsible for the daily operation and management
of the South Texas Poison Center. She holds a
Master of Arts in Counseling from the University
of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and is currently working on her
PHD in Applied Demography at UTSA.
Lizette's research areas of
expertise include Hispanic unintentional injury, social and economic
health disparities in minority communities, program evaluation, and
health survey research; her research has been published in national peer reviewed
journals, and her work is continuously highlighted at professional
conferences around the nation.

invasive/advanced laparoscopy surgery fellowship with the Texas

Dr. Logue attended medical school at The University
of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama and completed a
general surgery residency at The University of Tennessee Health Science
Center at Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Logue has been participating in a
minimally invasive fellowship (MIS) in our department since July of this
year. She joined us as faculty in October 2008. She will also have a joint appointment at
the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Peter Wang, MD, Clinical Associate Professor (Plastic Surgery)
Dr. Peter Wang is a board certified plastic surgeon, having earned his
medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in the
city of New York, and his dental degree from Harvard School of Dental
Medicine. He completed his training in plastic surgery at the Hospital
of the University of Pennsylvania, and completed his craniofacial and
pediatric plastic surgery fellowship at Children′s Hospital of Los
Angeles. Although adept at performing a wide range of plastic surgery, Dr. Wang′s
primary mission is to provide specialized care for children born with
cleft lip and cleft palate, craniosysnostosis, craniomaxillofacial
anomalies, hemangiomas, vascular malformations, birthmarks, congenital
nevus, jaw deformity, ear deformity and microtia. Dr. Wang joined our faculty in

Dr. Husain obtained his Medical Degree from the University of North
Dakota. He completed a residency in General Surgery at the University
of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He then completed fellowship training in
Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of North Carolina. He
subsequently was a fellow at Riley Children's Hospital - Indiana
University School of Medicine in Congenital Cardiac Surgery. Before
joining the Congenital Heart Institute of Texas in 2008, Dr. Husain was
on faculty at the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor of
Surgery and Pediatrics. He was a member of the Congenital Heart Center
and focused on the surgical treatment of children with congenital
cardiovascular disease. He is board certified in both General as well
as Cardiothoracic Surgery. His interests include neonatal cardiac
surgery, pediatric heart transplantation as well as overseas

In 1997 he joined the Surgery faculty at Brown University, Providence, RI. Gene Dickinson, LAN Specialist (SING)
Gene's joined the computer support group as our new technician. He is a native San Antonian,
but has lived at Medina Lake for the last 20
years. In 2007, Gene graduated from UTSA
with a Bachelors Business Administration in Information Systems.
Gene's wife is an elementary school teacher, and he has two daughters - one a student at UTSA,
and the other in elementary school. His first career was more than 30 years
in the automotive industry; he really enjoys motor sports of any kind. We're glad he's joined us,
and hope he gets as much enjoyment from his new career here at the Health Science Center.

Dr. Li joined Surgery in April 2008, as an Assistant Professor in the division of Vascular Surgery. He received his Master's Degree in Forensic Medicine from Shanxi Medical University, China, in 1988. In 2005, he did a research internship at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, Colorado. He completed his research fellowship here at the Health Science Center from 2005 to 2008.

Julie joined the Department of Surgery in March as assistant to the new
Vice Chairman for Research, Dr. Steven E. Wolf. Julie has over 16
years experience with state and private universities; six of these years
have been with the HSC. She previously coordinated the Department of
Medicine's research programs under the direction of then Chairman, Dr.
Robert A. Clark (now Assistant Vice President for Clinical Research) and
recently supported Dr. Brian A. Herman, Vice President for Research and
Professor of Cellular & Structural Biology, for four years with his
research endeavors. Julie's background is in NIH grant submissions,
laboratory management, fiscal management, public relations, and
event/project coordination. When not at the HSC or spending time with
her family, Julie is involved with many community projects in and
outside San Antonio.

Lisa M. Kelly, Project Coordinator (Research Administration)
Lisa Kelly joined the Department of Surgery's Research Administration team in December 2007 as a Project Coordinator. Ms. Kelly is responsible for assisting faculty in all phases of grant application production, processing, implementation, and reporting. In addition, she will coordinate collaborative faculty meetings and special events.
With more than eight years experience in both the public and private sectors, her research administration expertise includes grant, proposal and project management. She previously worked in the UTHSCSA Department of Psychiatry's Division of Alcohol and Drug Addiction, where she managed IRB protocols and assisted with faculty recruitment.
Ms. Kelly graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She has also taken graduate management courses at Incarnate Word and participated in a mini-MBA class offered by Rutgers University. Ms. Kelly plans to pursue a graduate degree in health care administration in the fall of 2008.

Director of Surgical Education
Dr. Willis holds a master's degree in human factors psychology and a
doctoral degree in cognitive psychology from Texas Tech University.
After graduate school, he worked with the Air Force Office of Scientific
Research at Lackland Air Force Base conducting basic and applied
research in the areas computer-based instruction and cognitive task
analysis. He left research to co-found an e-learning company, while
keeping touch with the academic world by holding a position as an
adjunct professor at University of Houston. Dr. Willis recently chose to
pursue his love of academia full-time and joined the UTHSCSA faculty in
2007.

Dr. De Armond is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and is fellowship trained in minimally invasive thoracic surgery at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Samer Sbayi, MD., is a native Canadian, who received is undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto. He went on to receive his medical Degree from Universidad Tecnologica de Santiago in the Dominican Republic. Subsequently, at Seton Hall University at St. Francis Medical Center he was trained in General Surgery. He currently is a fellow in the Minimally invasive surgery fellowship with interests in development in advanced laparoendoscopic procedures and its technology.

Dr. Fields has also completed an anesthesiology residency at Yale - New Haven Medical Center. He and his family are happy to be back in Texas.

the large property commercial real estate business (he was part of the
team that sold South Park and Rivercenter malls), Mark enjoys many ties

Brian Eastridge, MD, Clinical Associate Professor (Trauma)
Dr. Brian J. Eastridge will joined the Division of Trauma, on August 10, 2006 as Clinical Assistant Professor. He earned his
BS in Biochemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, VA in 1985. He then attended University of Maryland
School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD where he was conferred his Doctor of Medicine in 1989. His academic internship and
residency in General Surgery were completed at University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1989-1991 and 1993-
1996,with a NIH Trainee Fellowship in Trauma Research at the same institution from 1991-1993. He completed a Surgical
Critical Care/Trauma Fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas from 1996-1997.

As a service brat, Tammy spent her early years in Germany, attending elementary school in Mannheim.
From Europe, her family's next home was in Clayton, Indiana - and yes, the high school was surrounded
by cornfields. She served in the U.S. Air Force for 3 years, returning to Germany for much of her tour of
duty. Tammy has lived many places, but San Antonio is always home. She attended college, with
coursework ranging from early childhood development to pharmacy tech.

Lainie L. Penshorn, Perfusionist (Cardiothoracic)
Lainie Lynn Penshorn, RN, joins the growing Cardiothoracic Surgery team
on August 1, 2006 as a Perfusionist.
Ms. Penshorn graduated from the Texas Heart Institute
School of Perfusion Technology in Houston in 2006, and will sit for the
American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion in October. She graduated
cum laude from the UTHSCSA School of Nursing with a BS in Nursing in May 2002.
She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nurses.
Lainie was employed by the University Health System as a Staff RN in the
Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Unit and at Parkland Memorial
Hospital in Dallas as a Neuro Acute Staff RN.
Interestingly, she traveled to the Santo Domingo Mission in the
Dominican Republic where she conducted pump setup and operation for
pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass, educated Dominican residents, and
instructed hospital staff.

Aaron C. Mason, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor (Plastic Surgery)
Dr. Mason is a reconstructive plastic surgeon and pediatrician specializing in pediatric
plastic surgery. Specific interests include cleft-craniofacial care, vascular
lesions, and congenital nevi. He completed a craniofacial fellowship at the Hospital
for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, after training in plastic surgery at the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, having trained in
general pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. His research
interests include prevention and treatment of deformational plagiocephaly and the
development of an autologous soft tissue construct using bioengineered lipo-derived fat.
Arup K. Saha, Assistant Instructor (General Surgery)
Dr.Saha received his medical degree from the Calcutta National Medical
College in 1987 and subsequently he completed Masters Degree in Surgery
in 1994 from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences,
India. He moved to the USA with intent to pursue career in Surgery with
special interest in Laparoendoscopic Surgery. He finished his surgical
residency in June 2006 from Pinnacle Health Hospital, Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania. He has joined the UTHSCSA department of Surgery in July
2006 as a Fellow (Asst Instructor) in Laparoendoscopic Surgery.
Qian Wang, MD, Research Fellow (Plastic Surgery Research)
Dr. Qian Wang has joined the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in their Research group. His
research interests include human chromosome 3 and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3
and mutations causing achondroplasia and thanatophoric dysplasia.

Fruzsina K. Johnson, MD, Assistant Professor (Trauma
Research)
Dr. Fruzsina Johnson received her medical degree from Semmelweis
University in Budapest, Hungary. During her medical training she
completed a two-year research externship at the Department of
Pharmacology at New York Medical College. After completing a
postdoctoral fellowship in 2002 at the Department of Physiology at
Tulane University she joined the faculty in the same department. She
joined the Trauma Division research faculty in 2006. She serves on the
Porter Physiology Development Committee of the American Physiological
Society. She is an integrative microcirculatory physiologist and her
research interests include cardiovascular complications obesity,
diabetes, hypertension, trauma and hemorrhagic shock.
Robert A. Johnson, PhD, Assistant Professor (Trauma Research)
Dr. Robert Johnson received his MS degree in pharmacology in 1988 and
his PhD in physiology in 1992 from the University of Missouri -
Columbia. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department
of Pharmacology at New York Medical College he joined the faculty of the
same department in 1995. He spent a year as a Visiting Professor at
Escola Paulista de Medicina in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1998. He joined the
faculty at the Department of Physiology at Tulane University in 1999 and
was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2004. He serves on
the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology Heart and
Circulatory Physiology. He joined the Trauma Division research faculty
in 2006. He is an integrative cardiovascular physiologist and his
research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the
Department of Defense to study the mechanism of circulatory collapse
after hemorrhagic shock.
Kimberly Overton, Research Nurse (Trauma)
Kim Overton graduated from San Antonio College in May 1998 with an
Associates Degree in Nursing. In December 2004, she completed course
requirements at Texas Tech University Health Science Center to obtain a
Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. Ms. Overton has been employed as a recovery
room nurse her entire career. Before joining the Department of Surgery, she worked
in the Methodist Healthcare System for the past six years.
Ana M. Tattersall-Cocke, RN, APRN Clinical Nurse Specialist (Trauma)
Ms. Cocke received her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of
Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1998 and is a Clinical
Nurse Specialist. She joined the Division of Trauma in June 2006. She is
board certified with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. She serves as
an Advance Practice Nurse with the Resident team for the Trauma and
Emergency Surgery patients. Prior to joining the Trauma division, she
worked with the South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants.
Melissa Taylor, Faculty Associate (Cardiothoracic)
Melissa Dawn Taylor, PA-C, will join the Cardiothoracic Surgery team on
June 26, 2006, as a Faculty Associate. Ms. Taylor is pursuing her
special interest of a career in cardiothoracic surgery with primary
focus on post-heart and lung transplant patients. Melissa graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth with a
Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science Biology in May 2001 and from the
University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, in August 2003
with a Master of Science in Physician Assistant studies. From October 2003 to present, Ms. Taylor worked as both a PA and a
transplant coordinator for the heart and lung transplantation team at
UTMB. She has extensive experience in all phases of inpatient care,
admitting, ordering and reviewing labs, and evaluating clinic patients.
Melissa managed all aspects of post- and pre-transplant patient care.
Michael Wetzel, Senior Research Assistant (Vascular)
Michael Wetzel joined the department of vascular surgery in June 2006.
He recieved a B.S. in Biomedical Science in 2002, and an M.S. from the
UTHSCSA Cellular and Structural Biology department in May 2006. He is
looking foward to applying his research skills to a new field.

Deborah was employed with Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital for
15 months as an Organ Procurement/Perfusion Coordinator. She also worked on
a "prn" status for the San Antonio Eye Bank, procuring corneas. Deborah has
been working on a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice to apply in
forensics science field.
Susan K. McCollow, Family Nurse Practitioner (Trauma)
Ms. McCollow earned her Master's of Science in Nursing at the University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001, and is certified
as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Sue joined the Division of Trauma in May
2006. She serves as a Nurse Practitioner with the resident team
providing care to our Trauma and Emergency Surgery patients.
Jana Lee Normandin, Clinic Manager, Santa Rosa Surgery Clinic (UPG)
Jana Lee Normandin brings 25 years of experience in management and 12
years in health care. Her years in health care have been spent as the
Clinical Manager for the Department of Ob/Gyn at their private practice,
South Texas Women's Health Center. She holds a B.A. from Southwest
Texas State Univeristy, and is nationally certified as a Medical
Practice Manager.
Claudia H. Glass, Faculty Associate (General Surgery)
Mrs. Glass brings extensive nursing experience to the Bariatric
Surgery Program enabling her to provide high quality care to the
patients of UTHSCSA General Surgery both before and after surgery. Her
teaching and clinical experience at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, a
setting for Tulane and LSU Medical Schools gives her an insight into
large training programs. Focusing on bariatrics, Mrs Glass has practiced
in both inpatient and outpatient areas, caring for obese individuals
with the common conditions that occur with increasing weight. Mrs. Glass
has conducted research for clinical trials. She is enthusiastic to be a
part of the important work of caring for bariatric patients in the
educational setting of UTHSCSA.

Guiomar L. Garcia, Administrative Secretary (Residency Education)
Guiomar worked for the Residency Education office as a temporary for 8 months, joining the Department of
Surgery as a permanent employee in April of 2006. She moved to San Antonio a year ago from California where
she spent her first nine months after relocating from Bogotá, Colombia. In Colombia, Guiomar finished
her postgraduate degree in General Dentistry and worked as a dentist in her own private
facility. She also worked for the Fiscalia Nacional de Colombia in the Crime Investigation
Scene Department as the Crime Investigation Dentist Manager, a position she enjoyed very much.
Guiomar has a very comprehensive background, including research experience and excellent people
and managerial skills. She is fluent in Spanish and is currently studying to take the American
Board of General Dentistry exam to obtain her license in the United States. Guiomar enjoys
traveling, spending time with her family and friends, loves arts and crafts and is a great cook.

David Abramson, Administrative Associate (Cardiothoracic)
David joined the Cardiothoracic Surgery Administration team as
Administrative Associate in March of 2006. He earned a B.A. from
Indiana University at Bloomington and an M.B.A. in Finance from The
University of Texas at San Antonio. David was the first International
Education Fund scholar to represent UTSA at Consortium International for
Management and Business Analysis in Asolo, Italy. He is the former
Senior Financial Analyst for University Health System. Currently, David
is pursuing a CPA license. A native Texan, David has made his home in
San Antonio for the past 5 years and will be married early in 2007.
Sara Olivarri, Research Nurse (General Surgery)
Sara received her degree from the UTHSCSA, her 10 yrs of research
experience comes from working with the Women's Health Initiative (WHI)
study sponsored by the UTHSCSA Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
She has worked in OR/RR, Med/Surg and OB/Gyn
wards. Within the past year, Sara has gained experience in being a
diabetic educator and telephonic nursing for a disease management
company. She is looking forward to working again in the research field
with such a dynamic surgical team.
Sarah Rapach, Project Coordinator (Research Administration)
Sarah joined the Surgery Research Administration team as project coordinator in March of
2006. She graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, with a B.S. in
Communication Sciences and Disorders and with a Master of Healthcare
Administration from Southwest Texas State University. Sarah has worked
in the UTHSCSA Department of Neurology for several years.
