Janet McCarthy, R.N., receives Nurse Imagemaker of South Texas award
Janet McCarthy R.N., CCRC, research nurse supervisor in the Department of Surgery's trauma and emergency surgery division at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, recently was named a Nurse Imagemaker of South Texas. The honor was bestowed jointly by the Delta Alpha chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society and the Texas Nurses Association, District 8. The announcement was made at a luncheon on Saturday, May 31, at Oak Hills Country Club. Imagemakers are nominated by their peers or employers. The 34 nurses selected as Imagemakers from local health care, educational and professional organizations in the South Texas Community are honored as nurses who model:
- A professional image and positive, caring attitude
- Leadership qualities
- A commitment to continuous learning
- Significant contributions to organization and community
McCarthy was nominated for this honor by Lillian Sanchez, R.N., M.S.N., a research nurse from the Health Science Center's Office of Clinical Research.
"In 2001, before the Health Science Center's Vice President for Research Office was created, Janet initiated the formation of a network of research nurses and research coordinators from all departments," Sanchez said. "The intent was to create a group to share information related to human subject research such as regulations, Institutional Review Board policies, working with affiliate organizations and educational opportunities available. Janet is highly respected by her peers at our university and is an active member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals."
"It is an honor and privilege to be recognized for doing something you enjoy," McCarthy said. "I have strived to make the university a better place for research nurses and coordinators by offering a system of support in an ever-changing field. This honor recognizes the role all nurses play in the area of clinical research."
The ImageMaker awards have been a tradition for the Delta Alpha chapter of STTI for more than 20 years. Last year District 8 of the Texas Nurses Association joined this effort to celebrate the contributions of nurses in South Texas.
