2004 UTHSCSA Presidential Teaching Excellence Award
Dr. Robert Esterl never misses a teachable moment. According to his
students and colleagues, life serves as his classroom.
A talented transplant surgeon, Dr. Esterl teaches not only in the
classroom but also in the operating room, during morning rounds, in the
elevator, in his office, on the transplant jet, and, occasionally, at
his favorite Thai restaurant.
Dr. Robert Esterl is director of medical student education for the
department of surgery, and his colleagues say that he has truly
"nurtured education" within the department. He simultaneously advocates
for students and inspires them to excellence.
