UT Medicine thoracic surgeons Scott Johnson, MD, and Dan DeArmond, MD, have extensive experience performing anatomical lung resections for lung cancer.
Minimally invasive techniques (i.e., VATS thoracoscopy) are routinely used to diagnose lung masses that are suspicious for cancer.
In reviewing his experience, Dr.
Johnson's overall operative survival in patients undergoing lung
resections for cancer was 98%, and his long term survival in these
patients was better than the reported national averages stage for stage
(National Cancer Data Base Report, 1999).
His added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care, as well as his extensive training and expertise in performing lung transplantation have given him the added ability to perform more complex procedures in otherwise higher risk patients.
Over his last decade of experience, Dr. Johnson has trained several other surgeons in the art and science of anatomic pulmonary resection for lung cancer, and has led seminars and educated other physicians in the area of lung cancer treatment.
