Welcome to the website for the Division of Pediatric Surgery. Our practice was founded as the San Antonio Pediatric Surgery Associates (SAPSA) in 1999 with the purpose of delivering the most modern state-of-the-art pediatric general and thoracic surgery available in San Antonio and south Texas. Since its inception, SAPSA has grown to include four trained pediatric surgeons who are committed to the highest possible standards of excellence in the surgical care of infants, children, and adolescents. Our surgeons act as a team, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of all pediatric surgical disorders. Each surgeon is board-certified in pediatric surgery and is experienced in the management of both common and rare surgical diseases of children. Each of our surgeons has lectured and published extensively in the field of pediatric surgery, and we currently engage in clinical research in order to improve the surgical treatment of children worldwide.

In 2005, SAPSA was formally recognized as the Division of Pediatric Surgery within the Department of Surgery, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Service Organization

The Division of Pediatric Surgery is composed of the members of San Antonio Pediatric Surgery Associates (SAPSA), a group of pediatric general surgeons in private practice in San Antonio who also hold academic appointments within the Department of Surgery, UTHSCSA. The clinical practice of SAPSA includes over 95% of all pediatric surgical cases performed in this region, and rivals the annual pediatric surgical volume that is seen in the largest children's hospitals in North America. As such, the patient volume is more than adequate to provide continued support of the current general surgery residencies affiliated with SAPSA, a robust clinical research program, and potentially a formal pediatric surgery fellowship program.
