1881 - Texas Legislature approves creation of University of Texas at Austin. The Texas Legislature also approves creation of first University of Texas System medical school in Galveston, Texas
1917 - Robert B. Green Hospital opens
1944 - Founding of the San Antonio Medical Foundation
1947 - Legislative bill to site a medical school in San Antonio fails
1949 - Dallas receives approval from Legislature for medical school
1950 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st use of radioactive iodine 131 albumin for total blood volume determination
1955 - Bexar County Hospital District established as the first taxing and funding entity of its kind in the State of Texas
1955 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st conceived of coronary artery bypass using internal mammary artery anastomosis to ligated left main coronary artery in the dog
1956 - J.B. Aust, MD - Femoral popliteal bypass with reversed saphenous vein in US
1956 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st to use flow-limited molecules D2O and antipyrine to estimate tissue blood flow
1957 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st to produce tolerance to allergenic skin in adult mice using parabiosis of tolerant to non-tolerant mice
1959 - Bexar County legislators again proposed medical school in San Antonio. Legislation passed and the South Texas Medical School was born. Legislation required a teaching hospital as well
1959-60 - J.B. Aust, MD - Pioneered isolated perfusion cancer chemotherapy with first head and neck and first isolated liver perfusion
1961 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st hemicorporectomy in the world
1962 - Robert C. Berson, MD, first Dean of the medical school
1962 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st cadaver kidney transplant in Minnesota
1964 - J.B. Aust, MD - Proposed foreign antigen persistence as the requisite mechanism for acquired tolerance
1964 - Dean Berson resigns
1964 - F. Carter Pannill, MD, appointed Dean of medical school and serves until 1972. Credited with getting the actual campus buildings built and gathering the initial faculty, starting some five years after the school was created.
1965 - J. Bradley Aust, MD, appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery
1966 - J.B. Aust, MD - 1st described utero-siqmoidostomy as a cancer provoking technique for developing colon cancer at the site of the anastomosis
1966 - First class of 15 students is admitted to the Medical School; temporarily housed at Trinity University. Dr. David Root joins the Department of Surgery in what has become the Division of General Surgery.
1968 - Medical School and Bexar County Teaching Hospital (now University Hospital) are dedicated; South Texas Medical School opens its doors to first class
1970 - First transplantation performed (double unmatched renal procedure).
1972 - South Texas Medical School becomes the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with Dr. Frank Harrison as its first President.
1973 - Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital built, adding to the general surgery load carried by the department.
1974 - Aust Society founded.
1985 - John P. Howe, III, M.D., appointed president of the University
1985 - Dolph Briscoe, Jr., Library dedicated
1986 - Led by J. Kent Trinkle, MD, Department of Surgery begins heart transplantation program.
1996 - Dr. J. Bradley Aust retires as Chair of Surgery; Dr. William Strodel III appointed as Chair.
1998 - State Legislature authorizes creation of a Regional Academic Health Center in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (RAHC), to be administered by the Health Science Centers Medical School.
2000 - Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., appointed president of the University.
2003 - Stephen Cohn, MD, appointed as the 3rd Chair of the Department of Surgery.
2006 - William L. Henrich, MD, MACP, appointed Dean of the School of Medicine.
2008 - Stephen Cohn, MD, steps down as Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
2008 - Ronald M. Stewart, MD, Chief of Trauma, appointed Interim Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
2009 - Francisco Cigarroa appointed Chancellor of the University of Texas System. William L. Henrich, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine, steps in as Interim President of the University, and Glenn Halff, MD, Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery, steps in as Acting Dean of the School of Medicine.
2010 - J. Bradley Aust, MD, MS, PhD, passed away on the 17th of March, 2010.
2011 - Ronald M. Stewart, MD, appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery in April 2011.
