John G. Myers, MD, Associate Professor and Chief
Biosketch
Dr. Myers completed his medical degree and residency training at UTHSCSA in 1999, at which time he
joined the faculty in the Trauma and Emergency Surgery Division. He completed a Surgical Critical Care
fellowship in 2002 and is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. He serves on
numerous committees at University Hospital as well as the Health Science Center. His current interests
include trauma diagnostics, outcomes studies, process improvement and protocol development.

Daniel L. Dent, MD
Distinguished Teaching Professor,

Biosketch
Dr. Dent completed his medical degree at the University of South Florida
and his residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis; his
residency included an additional year of training in research. He
joined the faculty in 1996 and has received numerous teaching excellence
awards. Dr. Dent's research focus is in trauma and surgical infection.

Basil Pruitt, MD
Professor
Biosketch
Dr. Pruitt received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University
and received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine
in 1957. He completed his residency at the US Army Surgical Research
Unit at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, in 1964. During his tour of duty in
Vietnam Dr. Pruitt served as Chief of Professional Services at the 12th
Evacuation Hospital and Chief of the Trauma Research Team. He returned
to the US to serve as Commander and Director of the BAMC Burn Center for
27 years, after which he retired from the Medical Corps and joined the
faculty of UTHSC. He has held the office of President of the American
Burn Association, AAST, Surgical Infection Society, North American Burn
Society, Halsted Society, Western Surgical Association, International
Society for Burn Injuries, American Trauma Society, Southern Surgical
Association, and American Surgical Association. He has also served as a
member of the American Board of Surgery and the NIH Surgery,
Anesthesiology and Trauma Study Section. He has authored and co-authored
over 435 published papers, 162 textbook chapters, and 12 books and
monographs. Currently he is the Editor of the Journal of Trauma.

Harlan D. Root, MD
Professor
Biosketch
Dr. Root completed his undergraduate degree then his medical degree at
Cornell Medical School in 1953 and his residency at the University of
Minnesota in 1961. He joined the faculty of UTHSC in 1966 and is a
founder of the Department of Surgery. His many offices at the
University, each held for over 20 years, have included Emergency Center
Medical Director, Trauma Director, Chief of Vascular Surgery, Surgical
Residency Director and Deputy Surgery Chairman. During his career he
has been Governor-at-large from South Texas on the ACS Board of
Governors, been a member of the ACS Committee on Trauma Verification
Review, and served as President of the American Association for the
Surgery of Trauma. He is currently on the editorial board, Journal of
Trauma; a national consultant to the ACS Verification Review Committee;
and a reviewer for the American Journal of Surgery. He continues to
take trauma call and serves as advisor and mentor to students,
residents, fellows and faculty. His areas of research interest included
angioscopy in vein preparation and repair, vascular problems and
endothelial growth factor, trauma injury detection in trauma patients,
and blood volume changes in the injured patient.

Ronald M. Stewart, MD

Jocelyn and Joe Straus Endowed Chair in Trauma Research
Biosketch
Dr. Stewart graduated from medical school and completed his surgical residency
at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed a
2 year Trauma and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Tennessee in
Memphis. He became the Director of Trauma at University Hospital in 1993. Dr.
Stewart has been the Chairperson of the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory
Council for Trauma since 1996. He received the Faculty Member of the Year Award
from The University Health System in 1999. That same year he was awarded the
Bronze Quill for his writings on the injury prevention program Shattered
Dreams/D.E.A.D. (Drinking and Driving End All Dreams). In May 2000, Governor
George W. Bush appointed him to the Texas Emergency Medical Services and Trauma
Advisory Council. He has been the chair of the South Texas Chapter of the ACS
Committee on Trauma and the Region VI Chief of the Committee on Trauma and
currently serves on the ACS Committee on Trauma. He received the UTHSCSA
Presidential Award for Clinical Excellence and has received multiple medical
student and resident teaching awards. Dr. Stewart's research interests lie in
the areas of injury epidemiology, clinical trauma care, and health care policy.
He is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio and holds the Jocelyn and Joe Straus
Endowed Chair for Trauma Research. He is the Recorder for the Southwestern
Surgical Congress and the Secretary of the Texas Surgical Society.

Stephen M. Cohn, MD
Professor
Biosketch
Dr. Cohn received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and
completed his residency training at Baylor and Boston University, where
he then completed a critical care fellowship in 1987. He joined the
faculty at Yale University in 1990 where he served as Chief of Trauma
and Surgical Critical Care. In 1997 he arrived at the University of
Miami to become Chief, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
While in Miami he also held the offices of Medical Director of the Ryder
Trauma Center and Co-Director, US Army Trauma Training Center. Dr. Cohn
holds the Witten B. Russ
Chair.

Michael G. Corneille, MD
Associate Professor
Biosketch
Dr. Corneille completed medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School in
1998. After completing residency and critical care training at UTHSC, he joined
the faculty in 2004. He is board certified in general surgery and surgical
critical care. His interests include prevention of wound infections and glycemia
control in the ICU.

Deborah L. Mueller, MD
Clinical Associate Professor
Biosketch
Dr. Mueller received her medical degree from the
Medical University of South Carolina and completed her residency
training at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. After
completing a Critical Care Fellowship in 1998 at UT Southwestern, Dr.
Mueller joined the faculty at Wilford Hall Medical Center. She has recently retired from
the US Air Force, but while at Wilford Hall, Dr. Mueller held the positions of Medical Director
of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Vice Chairman for the Department of General Surgery.
Her research interests include blood transfusion,
ventilator associated pneumonia, and end-of-life care.

Jayson D. Aydelotte, MD
Associate Professor/Clinical
Biosketch
Dr. Aydelotte received his medical degree from UTHSCSA in 1998. He completed a
residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Brooke
Army Medical Center in 2006. He has been a staff surgeon in General Surgery and
Surgical Critical care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he was the
Surgical Director of the SICU and Chief of Trauma Surgery. Dr. Aydelotte was a
trauma surgeon at the 28th Combat Support hospital in Baghdad, Iraq in 2007 and
was the Chief of Surgery for the 47th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq in 2009.
Dr. Aydelotte is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
He separated from the Army in April of 2011 and joined the faculty of the
Division of Trauma in May. Dr. Aydelotte's interests include
motorcycle-associated injury prevention, new product development, and surgeon
physical fitness.

Lillian Liao, MD, MPH
Assistant Professor/Clinical
Biosketch
Lillian Liao is a microeconomist and public health advocate turned surgeon. Her primary
clinical and research interests are vascular and pediatric trauma surgery. Dr. Liao hopes to incorporate
all aspects of her education and training into her career development as a surgeon. Dr. Liao obtained
her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and her MPH
from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Helen Skaggs, MD

Biosketch
Dr. Skaggs earned her medical degree from the Medical University of
South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 2004. She completed
her surgical residency at the University of South Alabama
in Mobile, Alabama in June 2009, and completed a surgical critical care
fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio in June
2010. Currently, Dr. Skaggs is a clinical instructor in the Division of Trauma
and Emergency at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.

Gregory Goodwiler, MPAS, PA-C Faculty Associate
Mr. Goodwiler completed Bachelors degree in Physician Assistant Studies
at the Academy of Health Science at Fort Sam Houston in 1992 and his
Masters in Physician Assistant Studies through the University of
Nebraska 1996. His residency training in Emergency Medicine took place
at Brooke Army Medical Center where he eventually became Residency
Directory of the United States Army Physician's Assistant Emergency
Medicine Residency. He joined the faculty in 2003. His focus is initial
resuscitation and acute surgical issues.

Mr. Gourlas completed his PA degree through the Academy of Health
Sciences at Fort Sam Houston in 1996. He joined the faculty in 2003.
His area of focus is surgical critical care.

Amanda B. Loquias, RN, MSN, Faculty Associate
Biosketch
Ms. Loquias earned her Master's of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas Health
Science Center at San Antonio in 2005, and is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Amanda joined the Division of Trauma (full-time) in March of 2009. She serves as a Nurse
Practitioner with the resident team providing care to our Pediatric Trauma and Emergency
Surgery patients.

Susan K. McCollow, Family Nurse Practitioner
Ms. McCollow earned her Master's of Science in Nursing at the University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001, and is certified
as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Sue joined the Division of Trauma in May
2006. She serves as a Nurse Practitioner with the resident team
providing care to our Trauma and Emergency Surgery patients.

Biosketch
Ms. Schlather completed her Masters degree in Physician Assistant studies at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2008. Kristen joined the faculty in 2008 and works with the
resident team to provide care to our Trauma and Emergency Surgery patients.

Jeni L. Wilson, MS, RN, APRN, BC, Clinical Nurse Specialist
Ms. Wilson completed her Master of Science in Nursing at the University
of Illinois, Chicago in 1991 and is certified as a Clinical Nurse
Specialist. Joining the Division of Trauma in 2004, Ms Wilson serves as
an Advanced Practice Nurse with the Resident team providing care to our
Trauma and Emergency Surgery patients.
