University Health System (UHS) – University Hospital, San Antonio, Texas
University Hospital, a 604-bed acute care hospital, is the primary teaching facility for UT Health San Antonio, a regional Level 1 trauma center and a leader in organ transplantation. The University Health System employs more than 4,000 people and maintains an operating budget of over $615 million annually. The Trauma Center manages 4,000 Level 1 trauma activations a year; the Emergency Center averages 70,000 emergency patients each year. All trauma surgeons staffing the UH Trauma Center are active members of the UT Health San Antonio faculty and closely supervise the team of trauma residents, fellows, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

The Emergency Center at University Hospital is the largest ER in San Antonio – treating an average of 70,000 patients each year. It is also home to the leading Level I Trauma Center for a 22-county region of South/Central Texas.

UT Health San Antonio, Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, San Antonio, Texas
The Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery was established in 1993 to centralize and improve the care of trauma victims in Bexar County and the surrounding 22-county region in South Texas. More than 3000 trauma victims are admitted yearly to University Hospital. In addition to providing trauma care, the division also provides 24-hour emergency surgical services and critical care services to patients at University Hospital, both in the surgical trauma ICU and in the transplant ICU.
