Zhenyu Qin, MD, Vascular Research, asked to serve as peer reviewer for UK Wellcome Trust and Royal Society's Sir Henry Dale Fellowship applicants. The fellowship provides an opportunity for outstanding researchers in the UKto build an independent research career addressing an important biomedical question. Congratulations to Zhenyu Qin, MD, Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery Research and Director of the Vascular Metallomics Research Laboratory, who has been asked to continue to serve on the vascular peer reviewer panel for the Fall 2014 Vascular Wall Bio BSc1 session of the American Heart Association annual meeting. For the next three years, Zhenyu Qin, MD, Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery Research and Director of the Vascular Metallomics Research Laboratory, will be working in his lab with a Voelcker Scholar. Joining Dr. Qin's lab will be Saleel Sripada from Spring, Texas. Saleel was selected for the Voelcker Scholar program based on school grades and accomplishments, as well as community service. Zhenyu Qin, MD, Director of the Vascular Metallomics Research Laboratory, requested as consultant to National Science Foundation (NSF): The NSF Chemical Measurement and Imaging Program is seeking assistance from Dr. Qin in the evaluation of an elemental mass spectrometry imaging proposal. The NSF has also requested Dr. Qin's assistance in providing suggestions for additional reviewers in the field of vascular metallomics. (4-1-14)
Congratulations to Devon Harris, former Vascular Metallomics Research Laboratory (VMRL) research assistant. Devon has been accepted into the UTHSCSA Dental School, and will begin his dental education in July 2014. During his time as Dr. Zhenyu Qin's research assistant, Devon co-authored one published article, and is first author for another article which is currently in submission. Devon believes the work experience in Dr. Qin's VMRL lab has prepared him well for his dental education and professional career. (3-4-14)
Sixteen months after publication, Zhenyu Qin, MD, PhD, article in the Atherosclerosis Journal remains 'Most Read': Dr. Qin's article, 'The use of THP-1 cells as a model for mimicking the function and regulation of monocytes and macrophages in the vasculature,' was published in the March 2012 edition of the Atherosclerosis Journal. Voelcker scholars shine after multi-year mentoring program: Zhenyu Qin, MD, PhD, and director of the Vascular Metallomics Research Lab, mentored both Derek Lam and Jacob Carmichael over three summers, and the experience has been a positive one for all involved. Derek has two scientific publications: Zinc, copper and blood pressure: Human population studies, and first author on Inflammatory Mediator Profiling Reveals Immune Properties of Chemotactic Gradients and Macrophage Mediator Production Inhibition during Thioglycollate Elicited Peritoneal Inflammation,. Jacob Carmichael worked in Dr. Qin's lab on similar research, involving copper and its importance in healthy vascular tissue and neurological function, and Jacob credits his three summers of research experience in Dr. Qin's lab with his acceptance into Georgetown University's School of Nursing and Health Studies. Congratulations to Jacob Carmichael, past participant in the Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy, who has been accepted into Georgetown University's School of Nursing and Health Studies in Washington, DC. Only 12.5% of early applicants to Georgetown are accepted. In a letter to his UTHSCSA Department of Surgery mentor, Zhenyu Qin, MD, PhD, Jacob relates his belief that his experience in Dr. Qin's lab drove his early acceptance and admission into the Georgetown program, and expressed his gratitude for the three summers of research experience with Dr. Qin in his Vascular Metallomics Research Laboratory. Congratulations to medical student Michelle Moller, whose article, 'Tissue markers in human atherosclerotic carotid artery plaque,' has been published in the November 2012 Annals of Vascular Surgery. Ms. Moller's research was performed under the supervision and guidance of Zenhyu Qin, MD, PhD, and Boulos Toursarkissian, MD, in the Division of Vascular / Endovascular Surgery. (10-30-12)
